Jhhonka hawaa kaa

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
A few days ago the song “Ajeeb saanehaa mujh par guzar gayaa yaaron” from “Gaman”(1979) sung by Hariharan was posted. This has reminded me of a couple of songs of Hariharan which are my personal favourites. Here is a song from the Film “Ham dil de chuke Sanam” (1999) which Hariharan sang. The music score is by Ismail Darbar and lyricist is Mehboob. And Kavita Krishnamoorthy’s voice is also there at the end of the song, singing no words only the alaap. So technically it is a duet.
” Ham dil de chuke sanam” is the second movie made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali after ” Khaamoshi”. It has stars like Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Ajay Devgan, Vikram Gokhle, Suhasini Pathak(?), Vinay Pathak, and Helen plus a host of actors from Gujarati Theatre world. The story of the film is basically a love story, both usual and unusual. And thankfully it doesn’t end in a tragedy like classic love stories. It is both happy and unhappy sort of bitter sweet end. Boy meets girl, they fall in love. Due to family opposition, the love birds are separated and the girl is married to someone else. After marriage, the husband comes to know that girl loves someone else. He decides to sacrifice his own love and tries to reunite the love birds. In the end, the girl falls for the husband and decides to stay with him. This story was inspired from “woh saat din” starring Anil Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure and Naseeruddin Shah. So many of the out and out love stories, as far as I have seen, have ended in tragedy. “Ek Dooje ke liye” and “Qayamat se qayamat tak” readily come to mind, apart from the classics, “Laila majnu”, “Heer Ranjha” etc.
The song under discussion here, “jhonka hawaa ka aaj bhi” is a background song. It begins just as goons try to rob Aishwarya and Ajay Devgan, and Aishwarya is injured in the ensuing shooting accident. Ajay Devgan , the husband has brought her to Italy under the pretext of a honeymoon, but actually to reunite her with Salman Khan. They are yet to find/meet Salman Khan, at the time of this accident. And the song is expressing how all three of them are dealing with their feelings and personal dilemma’s. And this song also remind me of a somewhat similar song Kahin ek maasoom naazuk si ladki. Though that song was more straight forward, as the triangle of this film was not there.
The song has a Shloka in sanskrit, which I have tried to get correctly, with a friend’s help. If there is still any mistake, I request the readers to kindly bear with us. I mean both me and my friend 🙂 . I hope I havent made any major faux pas in this post as it keeps happening with me.
This film is also a musical like ‘Khaamoshi’ and it was a hit film, unlike ‘Khaamoshi’. Songs were all very good and some were based on Rajhasthani folk music. Another song from this film that I like a lot is “Tadap tadap ke iss dil se aah nikalti rahi” sung by K K.
Incidentally, in the film Salman Khan is named ‘Sameer” which means ‘hawaa ka jhonka’, so the song here is talking about Sameer himself. This reminds me, I was feeling that I missed something, while listing the cast above. This film also had a brief appearance by Zohra Sehgal and Johny Lever.
The full audio version is longer than the video link, so the lyrics are of full song as per audio link. I was unable to find the link to full video, but I am sure the song plays fully in the film, but in parts.

Chorus
Lyrics
aaaa aaa aaa aaaa
aaaa aaa aaa aaaa
aaaa aaa aaa aaaa
aaaa aaaa aaa aaa
jhonka hawaa ka aaj bhi
zulfen udaata hogaa na
tera dupatta
aaj bhi tere
sar se sarakta hogaa naa
aaa aaa aaa
baalon mein tere
aaj bhi
phool koyi sajta hogaa naa
thhandi hawaayen
raaton mein tujh ko
thhapkiyaan deti hogi naa
chaand ki thhandak
khwaabon mein tujh ko
le ke to jaati hogi naa
sooraj ki kirnen
subhaa ko teri
neenden udaati hogi naa
mere khayaalon mein sanam
khud se hi baaten karti hogi naa
main dekhtaa hoon
chhup chhup ke tum ko
mehsoos karti hogi naa
aaa aaa aaa
jhonka hawaa ka
aaj bhi
zulfen udaata hogaa na
tadeva lagnam sudinam tadeva
tara-balam chandra-balam tadeva
vidhya balam daiva balam tadeva
lakshmi-pateh tenghri yugam smarami
shubhlagna saavadhan
shubh mangal saavadhaan
kaagaz pe meri tasveer jaisi
kuchh to banaati hogi naa
ulat palat ke
dekh ke uss ko
jee bhar ke hansti hogi naa
hanste hanste
aankhen tumhaari
bhar bhar aati hogi naa
mujh ko dhakaa thhaa
dhoop mein jis se
woh aanchal bhigoti hogi naa
saawan ki rim jhim
meraa taraana
aaaa aaaaaaa
yaad dilaati hogi naa
aaaaaa aaaa aaaaa
ik ik meri baaten tum ko
aaaa aaa aaaa aaaaaaaa
yaad to aati hogi naa
aaa aaa aaa aaaa
yaad to aati hogi naa
aaa aaa aaa aaa
yaad to aati hogi naa
kyaa tum mere
inn sab sawaalon ka
kuchh to jawaab dogi naa
