“Chitralekha” (1964) was a Pushpa Pictures presentation. It was directed by Kidar Sharma. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Meena Kumari, Bela Bose, Minoo Mumtaz, Shobhana, Achla Sachdev, Altaf, Zeb Rehman, Mehmood etc in it.
This movie flopped at the box office and it was a big setback for all including Roshan, the music director of this movie who had composed some of the best music of his career. The failure of the movie meant that the music of this song failed to get popular on its day and failed to figure in Binaca geetmala pupularity charts.
With passage of time, the music of this movie have been appreciated and knowledgeable critics have counted “Chitralekha” (1964) among the most memorable musical movies of all time.
This movie had eight songs in it. As many as six of these songs have already been discussed.
The remaining two songs were two versions of the same song which was sung by Manna Dey and picturised on Mehmood.
Here is the song in both its versions. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.
With this, “Chitralekha” (1964) joins the list of movies with all their soongs covered in the blog.

Atul ji,
CHITRALEKHA-1964 was a remake of the Chitralekha-1941.And there was a great difference in these 2 films, though the Director was same-Kidar Sharma.
In 1941,Kidar Sharma had left Calcutta’s new Theatres after an insulting treatment from Di.K.Bose NT’s Director, over a matter of increase in salary of just Rs. 5/- !
He had joined Film corpn.for India,NT’s rivals in Calcutta and was paid 20000/-for making 2 films,Aulad and Chitralekha.Aulad was made and released.i t was a hit film.Just before he started Chitralekha,D.K.Bose met him and offered 15000/- for writing and Directing Raj Nartaki-a film by Sadhana and Madhu Bose,on the same theme.Kidar Sharma, who was still smarting with his insult on 5/- rupees increment incident, flatly refused.Bose threatened him. After Chitralekha was completed and released in New Cinema Theatre,Calcutta,Bose no stone unturned,to make it a flop. The film bombed at the Box office in Calcutta and Film Corpn.was in trouble. However Mr.S.R.Sharma,Kidar’s friend released the film in Delhi and North-Lo and Behold ! The film was a resounding success in North and then all over India.
Chitralekha gave Kidar name,Fame and Money.
Now Kidar wanted to replicate the same success in Chitralekha-64.The main role of Chitralekha was done by Meena Kumari(Mehtab in 41), Kumar giri by Ashok Kumar( A.S.Gyani in 41) Hero Bijgupta Samant by Pradeep Kr.(handsome Nandrekar in 41) etc..
The music was by Roshan (Zande Khan in 41).
One of the main reasons of the 64 edition’s failure was,the tastes of the audience had changed, secondly Meena Kumari was no match for Mehtab and Pradeep Kumar could never do acting-forget comparing with Nandrekar.
However The main reason,I think, was that in 1941,Kidar Sharma had to prove himself against the Big,bad D.K.Bose of New Theatres, where as in 64 there was no challenging situation at all.
Lot more can be said in this context, but…….
