Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ek Chhokariya beech bajariya

Posted on: November 28, 2012

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

When Alam Ara was released in 1931, people were awe-struck. Additionally, there were 7 songs in it. It was a novelty that the moving images on screen not only talked but they also sang. Alam Ara was lauded as a Landmark. One would imagine that there must have been a spate of Talkie films in its wake, but surprisingly only 24 in 1931, 61 in 1932 and 76 films in 1933 were made. This was because silent films were still being made till september 1934. Further the new filmmakers were yet to join the field. After 1934 the number crossed 100 and never stopped again.

Music and songs have always played an important role in Indian culture and hence no wonder that films had songs in them. Initially the frenzy was there, but later it settled to an average 8-10 songs per film. As there was no playback system, initially the actors had to sing their own songs. Even if not musically inclined they had no choice .After playback, trained and /or gifted singers took over.

For a long time only the lead pair had major chunk of the songs to them. Later the comedians and the character artists had songs filmed on them. In those days there were actor singers like Ashok kumar, Karan Dewan, Talat mehmood, Shanta Apte, Vanmala,D evikarani, Noorjehan, Suraiyya, Manju etc. Some singers like Noorjehan and Suraiyya rarely gave playback to others.

On the other hand, there was Singer Shyam who gave playback to many actors but never a single song was shot on him in his career.

There were a few occasions when actually a NON SINGER also sang a song in a stray film, may be becuae of the need of the story or becuase of the demand of the situation. May be it was on that actor’s insistence. Whatever be the case, it was a novelty. Very unlikely and odd actors like Sheikh Mukhtar and Anwar Hussain also sang songs-not Lip syncing, but singing songs in their own voice !

When I realised this I wanted to find out who could be such actors/actresses. To my surprise there were quite a few non singers who had sung songs in movies made from 1950s to 1970s.

Some of these unlikely singers were- Anwar Hussain, Asrani, Bhagwan, Birbal, Deven Verma, Dinesh Hingoo, I.S.Johar, Jagdeep, Javed Jafrey, Jeevan, Johnny Whisky, Keshto Mmukherjee, Mehmood(jr.), Majnu, Mirza Musharraf, Maruti, Mohan Choti, Mukri, Omprakash, Paintal,Prem Chopra, Premnath, Rajendranath, Raaj kumar(jaani), Sheikh Mukhtar, Sudesh kumar etc etc.

From the 80s,almost all major stars started singing their songs and the novelty waned.

I went through the songs of 1119 films of 50s, 959 films of 60s, and 1202 films of 70s. At an average of 8 songs per film, I checked more than 26000 songs from the HFGK and selected 25 such songs sung by non Singers.

To my dismay, most of the songs are NOT available anymore.

However I have got few songs with me. We propose to have a series of SONGS BY NON-SINGERS, in the coming few days, where we will know more about the song, singer and the film.

FIRST in this series is a song sung by MUKRI.

Lovers of old films can not forget Mukri, whose very presence on the screen evoked laughter. He did all types of roles in over 600 films in a span of 50 years.

MOHAMMED UMER MUKRI-a Konkani Muslim, claiming Marathi as his mother tongue was born on 5-1-1922 at Uran in Raigad District of Maharashtra. He had a big family. Seeing his disinterest in schooling, he was sent to Bombay, to his elder brother, for studies. He studied in Anjuman Islam High school near VT station. Dilip Kumar was his schoolmate and they became thick friends. This friendship lasted lifetime despite the differnce in status of both .Dilip kumar was present in his marriage and also attended his funeral.

Mukri’s entry in Film line was also interesting. One fine morning he went directly to the owners of ‘Saroj Movietone’ and asked for a job. He was asked,’ Gaana aata hai ?”

He unhasitatingly lied,” Haan haan, aata hai”

Immediately music room was readied up. Incidentally, composer Meer saheb was also present,so were the lead pair Nasir and Zebunnisa. He was asked to sing a song to the accompaniment of music. He sang a song from ‘ Shirin Farhad’. Actually he did not know singing, but when he started, the others started laughing. Without hasitation he kept one hand on his eyes and continued.

Meersahib finally stopped him, took him to the boss and told him,”He can not sing, but he is a good comedian”. Mukri was hired at 75/- p.m. salary !

Later he joined Bombay Talkies and worked as an assistant director, production manager and also acted in films. His first film was Nadan. In Pratima-1945, he acted with Dilip kumar the hero. From then on, he became a fixture in every Dilip Kumar film.

Mukri’s small frame, thick eyebrows, toothless smile and tongue-biting dialogue delivery were his assets. Actually, he had all 32 teeth, but they were small and it looked like he had no teeth. This caused a misunderstanding while fixing his marriage.

His last film was Betaj Badshah-1994. In his last days he lived a contented life in a posh flat in versova, with wife and 5 children. He died peacefully on 4-9-2000.

Mukri sang a few lines in a song in HEERA-1973.

HEERA-1973 was a Sultan Pictures’ film, directed by Sultan Ahmed. Story and screenplay were by K B Pathak and dialogues were by Wajahat Mirza. Lyrics were written by Indeevar and Anjaan.

Music was composed by Kalyan ji- Anand ji.

The story of Heera was totally outdated one at that period. From 68-69 onwards films with modern backdrops, based on city life and films with updated storylines were being made. This was also the time when films like Seeta aur Geeta, Chhupa Rustom, Dhund, Banarasi Thug, Aradhana, Anamika,Victoria 203, Parichay etc were coming. In this scenario,a story involving village, moneylender, Baghi Daku etc were not digestible material for moviegoers.

Heera(Sunil Dutt) is a happy, young man, in love with the villege moneylender Dhaniram(Kanhaiyalal)’s daughter Asha (Asha Parekh). Dhaniram wants to make Balwant(Shatrughna Sinha) his
son in law. This Balwant is a dacoit in the nights. He cheats Lahariya(Farida Jalal),daughter of the Tribal head Changu(Anwar Hussain). She becomes pregnant. Cheated by Balwant she tries to commit suicide, but Heera saves her. Then Balwant murders her. Heera is accused of this murder, tried and sentenced to death by hanging. He escapes from jail and becomes a Baghi Daku. He only wants to find the real murderer and clear his own name. Asha, Mukri and others help him to expose and nail Balwant for that murder. Balwant is arrested.
Heera is declared ‘Beqasoor’ and released ‘ba ijjat’. Heera and Asha unite .

Let us now hear the song in which MUKRI has sung some lines……

A good beginning of an interesting series of songs by ‘non-singers’.

I would suggest to have a new category of songs – ‘songs by non singers’ or ‘non-singer songs’. We already have few non-singer’s songs in the blog – Manmohan Krihsna, Mohan Choti, Johny Walker, Anand Bakshi, Deven Verma, Aamir Khan etc.

kamath ji,
Songs by Non Singers- I mean those people who were absolutely novices and have sung hardly any song in the films.
In this series,I would not include people like Johnny Walker,MM Krishna,
Mehmood,Sunder, because they have many songs to their credit in which they have participated. Also I would prefer those who have closed their innings-so no future songs are possible.
The idea of doing this feature is not implementing a novel theme, but to bring to light that side of those actors which was unknown and hence enjoyable.

Dear Arunji,
I would like to seek your kind clarification on two points in your article:
1. You have said that “Singer Shyam … gave playback to many actors but never a single song was shot on him in his career.” But isn’t he the same Shyam who sang duet with Suraiya “Tu mera chaand mein teri chandni” in Dillagi (1949) which was shot on both of them?
2. Am I right that Noorjehan turned a playback singer in the later years of her career in Pakistan after her acting days were over?
Best regards, Shekhar Gupta

Shekhar ji,
Please note that ACTOR Shyam and SINGER Shyam Kumar were 2 different persons.Actor shyam was only an actor,he never sang.
Singer Shyam Kumar was an actor of side roles/villain AND a playback singer.
For your additional information please see this link, where I have explained in details with short Bios of both.

secondly,Noorjahan took up playback singing in Pakistan ONLY when she stopped acting in films.

Dil Hai Hamara Phool Se Nazuk from Faulad (63) is a sort of a group song, where a single singer, Rafi Saab has given voice for multiple actors including Shyam Kumar, along with Dara Singh, Kamal Mehra, etc.

this is an interesting topic to discus. i can remember Mukri’s singing antics in “Madhuban main Radhika naache re” from “Kohinoor” & his “na na na na naji” in “Amar Akbar Anthony” song “Tayab Ali pyar ka dushman”. i don’t know if he has anymore such songs

Like

Mukri has Lip synched in many films,e.g. Kohinoor, but he has sung in his voice in only this one song few lines.

Tayyab Ali Pyar ka Dushman, also has Mukri’s own voice, but there he is just singing Naa Ji Naa Ji Naa Ji twice in reply to Rafi Saab singing for Rishi Kapoor, so he is not credited on the soundtrack.

Sir, i would only repeat what Prakash ji had said above. We are really lucky to have your continuous and ‘innovative’ blessings with us… thanks.
@ Atul ji – Saying only thanks is nothing for the great work being carried by you. But we can only say that ‘ thanks you very much …….. (upto infinite)

We are forgetting the great Om Prakash.
Shyam the villain was also body builder and was too menacing to be singer but still a good singer

Nitin ji,
We are NOT forgetting Omprakash. His turn will also come.

Jai Mahalaxmi Maa (97), Sar Aankhon Par (99) are supposed to be the last movies of Mukri.

Ekta Kapoor wanted to cast him in a tv serial but Mukri declined because of his health. So, Jeetendra supposed to have called him to convince, and Mukri replied, I’m not doing so well right now, and knowing that how can I put ur daugther thru difficulties in case something happens to me, and soon after that he passed away.

Dilip Kumar said when he used to organize shows for govt of India, Pandit Nehru used to request to bring along his friend Mukri also.

Would look forward to Javed Jaffrey in this series. I know his singing from Meri Jung (85) onwards, but not aware of any of his songs from 70s and earlier.

Arunji,
Deri ho gayi aap ka dhanyawaad karne/kehne mein. 😦 Just one line will say what I am trying to express for the effect of mesmerizing/informative posts that you write

“Jab chhaaye mera jaadoo, koi bach na paaye….”

Mujhe ye pata hai ki mere jaise aap ke sabhi chaahak aap ke ye “write ups” se bachana bhi nahin chaahenge. 🙂
Thank you for the new series. Ab doosre kalaakar ko jaan ne ke liye intezaar karenge.
