Talat Mehmood had sung most of his duet songs mainly with Suraiyya, Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Sudha Malhotra. I get a feel of an affinity between the singers on the one hand and the actors on the screen on the other hand when I listen to Talat Mehmood-Geeta Dutt duets. This combination is pleasing to my ears and gives credence to what is intended in the lyrics. The song which comes to my mind in this context is ‘armaan bhare dil ki lagan tere liye hai’ from JAAN PEHCHAAN (1950).

Many of the songs that we discuss in this blog are those that we have heard in the past and we want to relive them and enjoy them again. There there is another kind of music, one that we may never have heard before for the simple reason that these songs did not become popular enough to get played on radio. With passage of time, these songs got buried under the sand of time, apparently for ever.

We, who in this blog discuss the songs of the golden era on a daily basis, are so familiar with the artists involved in these songs that they feel like close acquaintances. So any living artist breathing his/her last comes as a shock to us, even when it is well known that death is inevitable for everyone.

There are some songs which I feel are better heard than watched. The evergreen song “aapki nazron ne samjha pyar ke kaabil mujhe” was one of my favourites and I had pinned great hopes on its video clip. I was disappointed the moment I watched the video clip of this song. Even now whenever I listen to this song on the audio clip, Darmendra’s expressionless face comes before my eyes which act as a speed breaker in the smooth flow of an otherwise melodious song.

During late 1950s, Shashdhar Mukherji and Agha Kashmiri were discussing the next movie of Fimalaya in the formers residence. Shashdhar Mukherji wanted to sign up Shammi Kapoor, but Agha Hashra Kashmiri pointed at the youngster arriving at the home and told Shashdhar Mukherji-“Here is the hero of your movie”. That younster of none other than Joy Mukherji, Shashdhar Mukherji’s son. Shashdhar Mukherji was skeptical but he entrusted the job of grooming Joy Mukherji as a hero on Kashmiri. The mention of the title “Chaudhvin Ka chaand” (1960) is enough for one to recall the title song of this movie which I was aware of for as long as I can remember. That is how popular this song was. Let me hasten to add that I was not born when this movie and its songs were released, but I recall hearing this song in late 1960s. Other songs of this movie were also popular , but unlike the above mentioned song, they did not contain the title, so I was not aware that they also belonged to the same movie.
