This is the 89th birth anniversary of Mohammed Rafi sahib on 24/12/2013. So I had decided to write a post this time.
I had taken leave from the office since Friday. We were away for the weekend and have gotten back today. As I have said before, I am not good at writing tributes or post really eulogizing somebody. Especially someone so beyond our reach that words fail us. The whole day has gone by and I have the lyrics ready but no specific idea about what to write in the post.
We are 11 years short of Rafi Sahab’s Centenary. Thinking ahead, one wonders if his songs will last till than. Not in terms of public memory or in hearts of his fans, but the in terms of posts in the blog. Thinking far ahead, as is my wont.
I have recently been rediscovering the delight of train journey, on our long distance trains. I undertook another such a journey with my husband. Now, we have all heard the saying that ‘beggers cant be choosers’.
It so transpired that the train had stopped at a Junction, my husband got down to just take a walk and some fresh air. Dusk had fallen and the air was chilly as it gets in winter, even in hot climes. This part of the platform was in dark with no lights and stalls. There was a begger who was crawling/sliding along on the platform. What followed in this :
The begger : “ Sahib mujhe dus rupaye do to main bhi chai pee loon.”
My husband give him the money, thinking of the chill in the air.
The begger took the note and held it out to him again and said :
‘Aap ye dus rupaye lo aur stall se chai la ke do.’
My husband was taken aback and did not react immediately.
One of the co-passengers who was watching this told the beggar :
‘Aap khud ja ke chai le lo warna hamaari train chhoot jaayegi’
The result is that beggers are so savvy, that they can choose. They are well prepared, as to who, when, what and how. I never asked my husband what he would have done if the co-passenger had not intervened, because I know the answer.
The Rafi solo being presented here is from the film ‘Pyaasi Shaam’ (1969). The song is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and the lyricist is Majrooh Sultanpuri. The sad song which is making Sharmila Tagore cry at her own party, is picturized as a ‘piano song ‘ being sung by Sunil Dutt. Feroz Khan is enjoying the song as the friend in question.
The song is special due to the earnest expression in Rafi sahab’s singing. I have thought long about this one and come to this conclusion. My conclusions apart, this day is about rememberence of Rafi sahab and his songs, so this is a humble tribute.

Song-Yaaron meraa saathh nibhaao (Pyaasi Shaam)1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Lyrics
Yaaron meraa saathh nibhaao
roz aisi mehfil kahaan aa
bheeg jaayen aaj palken
aao hansen itnaa
yaaron meraa saathh nibhaao
roz aisi mehfil kahaan aa
bheeg jaayen aaj palken
aao hansen itnaa
ho o o
aa aa aaa
rahe na kuchh aaj sab lutaa do
dilon mein jitnaa hai pyaar baaqi
rahe na kuchh aaj sab lutaa do
dilon mein jitnaa hai pyaar baaqi
rang ho jitne bhi yahin sajaa do
hogi na kal yeh bahaar baaqi
hansi ke charaagh jalaao
ho gayee raat jawaan aa
bheeg jaayen aaj palken
aao hansen itnaa
yaaron meraa saathh nibhaao
roz aisi mehfil kahaan aa
bheeg jaayen aaj palken
aao hansen itnaa
kisi ke liye koyi lutaa to gham kyaa
jeene ko ik yeh khushi bahot hai
kisi ke liye koyi lutaa to gham kyaa
jeene ko ik yeh khushi bahot hai
milen na milen ek sanam ki baahen
mujhe tumhaari dosti bahot hai
dekho aise door na jaao
pyaar ka yahi hai samaan aa
bheeg jaayen aaj palken
aao hansen itnaa
ho yaaron meraa saathh nibhaao
roz aisi mehfil kahaan aa
bheeg jaayen aaj palken
aao hansen itnaa
aao hansen itnaa
aao hansen itnaa

hullo nahmji
your post was very good. after i read it i saw we have around 2124 songs of Rafi on the blog. and going by what i heard on Total Recall on TIMES NOW channel on sunday Rafi has around 25000 songs to his credit. now if our 2124 songs are included we still have 22876 songs to cover. now i am not sure if the number includes non Bollywood numbers and non fim songs. be happy!!!!:-)

Hello to you too.
It seems Times Now’s Total recall is not that well researched. There are around 5000 known songs by Rafi sahab, including other languages and non-film songs.
The last couple of centuries of his song on the blog have been incredibly slow paced. Even if around 250 songs a year are posted in the blog, we might just be able stretch it for eleven years. It is just a thought.
