GEMS FROM THE MIGRATORS…..song no. 9
———————————————-

When we talk of Partition and Migration of artistes from one country to another, only the famous and the well known names are taken. There were hundreds of small time actors, directors, lyricists, composers, instrument players, chorus singers, technicians etc who were not known to many and also had migrated for various reasons. The other day I was reading a book, ” Who’s who: Music in Pakistan ” written by A.Shaikh and M.Shaikh. In this book I found several names of singers, composers, lyricists and above all instrument players, who shifted to Pakistan.

My interest in Urdu ghazals is as old as my interest in Hindi film songs of the golden era. For me, Talat Mehmood, Madan Mohan, Sahir Ludhinavi, Kaifi Azmi were synonymous with filmy ghazals of golden period. Of course, I was already aware of one of the greatest Urdu poets of Indian sub-continent, Allama Iqbal’s name associated with ‘saare jahaan se achcha Hindustan hamaara’ from my school days. The ghazals of the film ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) expanded my horizon of Urdu poetry of Mirza Ghalib and some other poets like Daagh through non-filmy ghazals. From 1972 onwards, TV became a major medium through which I could watch the programmes of Urdu ghazal singing covering singers like Rajkumar Rizvi and his wife Indrani Rizvi, Rajendra Mehta and his wife Neena Mehta, Chandan Das, Peenaz Masani, Talat Aziz and many more.

GEMS FROM THE MIGRATORS…….song no. 8
———————————————

After Partition, there was a rush to migrate to Pakistan and artists continued to shift there from 47 to almost 1950. Some artistes like Noorjehan left immediately. There were few cases where some people borrowed money from friends and then left the country quietly, leaving the money lender high and dry. By about 49-50, almost everything was settled on both sides. The conditions in Lahore and Karachi had stabilised considerably for film making and lots of opportunities existed for film artistes there by mid 50s. That led to a second wave of migration to Pakistan at that time. Those who had continued in India completed their assignments here and went to Pakistan.

Train travellers in India are quite used to crowding, not just in the lower classes, but even in upper classes. Getting privacy is the last thing they expect in a public transport system like Indian railways.

When I woke up early morning and started the computer, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the google doodle on google.co.in contained Kishore Kumar’s sketch in it. So if google can remember 4 august as the birth anniversary of Kishore Kumar, then this blog cannot be left behind, of course.

Kishore Doodle
