Aah, the wonderful world of Chitragupt’s melodies. When I first saw Chetan Anand’s ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964), on TV, I was a pre teen kid, not old enough to really appreciate the human pathos and the emotions involved in the storyline. But of course, there are a few passages and images that simply stuck to my mind. Randomly they would pass through the mind’s screen. This would continue for many, many years till the time I revisited the film, and then sat through it for a complete view. This was after I had read a lot about this film, its background, its actors, and its impact on the public mind during those troubled war years of 1960s and early 1970.

One can find a mix of themes in the films produced in an year easily.There have been love stories, Historicals, mythological, Stunts, comedies, tragedies, horror, musicals etc etc. However ONE Genre is permanent or rather was permanent, from the beginning of Silent films up to 1970 end. The Genre is RELIGIOUS FILMS.

There were at least two movies called “Sultana Daaku”. One was produced in 1956 and another in 1972.

Kaifi Azmi (14 january 1919- 10 may 2002), whose 12th death anniversary falls today (10 may 2014) was the lyricist in both these movies. He shared the duty of lyrics writing with three other lyricists in “Sultana Daaku” (1956) whereas he was the only lyricist for “Sultaana Daaku” (1972).

Today Mumbai (erstwhile BOMBAY) boasts of being the only place where Hindi films are made, but in the initial stages of Film-making, it was not so. There were other centres too, which made Hindi films like Calcutta, Poona, Kolhapur, Madras, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Lahore and some odd towns as well. Out of all these,the most famous and the biggest-qualitatively- had always been CALCUTTA.
