[A poet’s perspective it is. We are all aware that the life breath will cease one day. But still, when a dear one departs, the sadness in the heart expresses itself in these very words. . . “Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahaan Mein Kho Gaye”].

The words are from the pen of Sahir – the poet extraordinaire, whose poetry has touched every strand in the fabric of life, every passion, every sentiment of the human psyche. A poet who has given us near about seven hundred film songs, that express a multitude of emotions coloring the canvas of life.

Remembering Sahir Sb, on the anniversary of his passing away today (25th Oct, 1980).

More than three decades have passed. The memories will not go away. He lives, through his words, that waft through the memory lanes as songs that have moved us, made us happy, brought tears to our eyes, put an extra pump in the heartbeats, garnered exuberance, massaged tenderness into the mind, showed us the stark realities of life, exhorted the blood to flow and boil in the veins, touched our lips with a smile, put a soft touch on to our hands, and if nothing else, his words tell us about life, and what is the value of being human. . . “Insaan Ki Aulaad Hai, Insaan Banega” (‘Dhool Ka Phool’, 1959)

As I browse through the list of songs that have come from his pen, it feels like a limitless panorama of a multitude colors of emotions, jostling with one another to catch the attention of the listener / reader. Well, every poet has a mark for the manner in which words are strung together and the ideas they generate. But Sahir Sb’s poetry has something. . . well, something ‘Sahir’ like, that makes it different and distinguishing.

Life sketches are a matter of record. Anecdotes and surprising facts are a matter of routine. It is more about the heart full of wealth of stirring emotions that eventually are the memorable artifact. When he made his debut, back in the 1948, he wrote the lines “Mere Charkhe Mein Jeevan Ka Raag Sakhi. . .” for the film ‘Azaadi Ki Raah Par’. It was a time of passionate fervor, of a nation coming together once again to write a new history. But very soon he was to pen the words “husn bhi faani aur ishq bhi faani hai, hans ke bitaa le do ghadi ki jawaani hai” (from the song “Suno Gajar Kya Gaaye” – ‘Baazi’ (1951)). A year later, he created the magic of “Sun Jaa Dil Ki Dastaan” (‘Jaal’ – 1952), with the words “ek baar chal diye, gar tujhe pukaar ke, laut ken a aayenge kaafile bahaar ke”.  And many more such crooning lyrics that will put a flutter in the heart.

And then in 1955, he would write “Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Saanware, Brij Mein Akeli Raadhey Khoi Khoi Re” (‘Devdas’). In 1955 again, came the words “Basti Basti Parbat Parbat, Gaata Jaaye Banjaara, Le Kar Dil Ka Iktaara. . .” (‘Railway Platform’).  He would say “Johny Jeene Mein Kya Hai Marne Mein Kya Hai”, and in the same breath he would also utter “Dukhi Mann Mere Sun Mera Kehna, Jahaan Nahin Chaina, Wahaan Nahin Rehna. . .” (‘Funtoosh’, 1956). He would then say “Aaj Sajan Mohey Ang Lagaa Lo”, and in the same breath he would say “Jaane Wo Kaise Log The Jinke Pyaar Ko Pyaar Mila. . .” (‘Pyaasa’, 1957)

Over the years, the expressions of life came in colors that varied immensely. His words have become icons and oft quoted – “Aurat Ne Janam Diya Mardon Ko” (‘Sadhna’, 1958), “Ye Ishq Ishq Hai Ishq Ishq” (‘Barsaat Ki Raat’, 1960), “Wo Subah Kabhi To Aayegi” (‘Phir Subah Hogi’, 1958), “Aasmaan Pe Hai Khuda, Aur Zameen Pe Hum” (also ‘Phir Subah Hogi’, 1958), “Pyar Par Bas To Nahin Hai Mera Lekin Phir Bhi. . .” (‘Soney Ki Chidiya’, 1958), “Chaahe Ye Maano Chaahe Wo Maano. . .” (‘Dharamputra’, 1961), “. . .Har Fiqr Ko Dhuen Mein Udaata Chalaa Gaya” (‘Hum Dono’, 1961), “Laaga Chunri Mein Daag. . .” (‘Dil Hi To Hai’, 1963), “Chalo Ik Baar Phir Se Ajnabi Ban Jaye Hum Dono. . .” (‘Gumrah’, 1963), “Ashqon Mein Jo Paaya Hai Wo Geeton Mein Diya Hai” (‘Chaandi Ki Deewaar’, 1964), “Zindagi Ittefaaq Hai. . .” (‘Aadmi Aur Insaan’, 1968), and on and on and on. Words that steal your heart, words that pull strings that were unknown before – “Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jaao To Ye Haq Hai Tumko”, and then add the remorseful resignation “Meri Baat Aur Hai, Maine To Mohabbat Ki Hai”. . .

The descriptions and appreciations cease very soon. I could continue, but could not. The beauty of his words and lines continues to make the heart marvel at the vision of this poet of ‘life’. A man of passions, and yet a lonely heart that passed through alone. At one place I have read some lines written by the poetess Amrita Pritam. Her expression about Sahir on meeting him early on, she writes, “. . . meeting him was like, the loneliness inside me took a human form and came face to face with me.” Was it her own loneliness, or a spontaneous resonance of the loneliness within Sahir. . . could be.

A life that was expressive, enigmatic, combative. . . and so many more flavors that he lived through, in his fifty nine years of stay and struggle on this earth. And then, he went away, in a moment they say. All we know now is “Wo Na Aayenge Palat Kar, Unhen Laakh Hum Bulaayen” (‘Devdas’, 1955).

For today’s post, I present this ticklish memory tickler from the 1958 film ‘Light House’. N Dutta has strung together the notes that make the words of exuberance come alive with energy and cheer. This song is a lovely memory from the radio listening days, and I wonder it has managed stay away from this blog for so long. And glad too, that I bring it on to the blog today.

Singing voice is Asha Bhosle – the one voice that alone could do justice to the excitement and keen gusto that is built into the words and notes. The pace is excellent, and the rendition. . . makes one fall into love once again.

The message from Avinash ji came in quite early, but it took me some time getting around to making the change. The earlier posted song in this post no. was inadvertently duplicated. Fault is mine, that I missed the complete check on the song. As I was checking my files, it seems that certain filter was on, which restricted me from seeing that song listed.

I make a change to another, lesser heard, but a wonderful gem of a poignant song from the 1978 film ‘Nawaab Saheb’. The music composition is by C Arjun. On screen the song is performed by Rehana Sultana. In the interludes we also see Parikshit Sahni and Tamanna. I have not seen the film; what I can surmise is that Rehana and Parikshit have a past relationship that apparently didn’t go well. A sad song whose words are really touching – the sense of loneliness come flowing with the words – words from the pen of Sahir.

And yes, Atul ji reminds me, this turns up to be the 2100th song of Asha ji on this blog. Wow, what a milestone to reach, and that, in such style. Listen and love the memories once again.

Song – Ek Khwaab e Tamanna Bhoole The (Nawaab Saheb) (1978) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Sahir Ludhianvi, MD – C Arjun

Lyrics

ek khwaab e tamanna bhoole the
ek khwaab e tamanna phir dekha
haalaat ki khoobi kya kahiye
dil phoonk tamaasha phir dekha
ek khwaab e tamanna bhoole the
ek khwaab e tamanna phir dekha

ulfat ke mehakte gulshan mein
jo phool khile auron ne chune
ulfat ke mehakte gulshan mein
jo phool khile auron ne chune
apni taqdeer mein sehra tha
taqdeer mein sehra phir dekha
haalaat ki khoobi kya kahiye
dil phoonk tamaasha phir dekha
ek khwaab e tamanna bhoole the
ek khwaab e tamanna phir dekha

pehle bhi kahaan dilshaad the hum
ik sehmi hui fariyaad the hum
pehle bhi kahaan dilshaad the hum
ik sehmi hui fariyaad the hum
armaanon ki neeyat phir dekhi
khwaabon ka janaaza phir dekha
haalaat ki khoobi kya kahiye
dil phoonk tamaasha phir dekha
ek khwaab e tamanna bhoole the
ek khwaab e tamanna phir dekha

haan un ki khushi mein hum khush hain
is rooh ke saare gham khush hain
haan un ki khushi mein hum khush hain
is rooh ke saare gham khush hain
khud sej sajaa kar auron ki
aaj apne ko tanhaa phir dekha
haalaat ki khoobi kya kahiye
dil phoonk tamaasha phir dekha
ek khwaab e tamanna bhoole the
ek khwaab e tamanna phir dekha

Avinash ji,

Thanks for your message as well as the call. The day has been quite hectic, as many others before today. But now I have made the change.

Apologies for this faux-pas.

Dear All,

An important update to this post. Avinash ji caught it very quickly, that the earlier song (“Nainon Se Nainan Laage. . .”) in this post for Sahir Sb, was already on the blog, posted way back in 2012. The error is mine, I missed it when checking to create this post.

I have now replaced the earlier song. The new addition is a song which 20 years newer (from 1978).

Apologies for this faux-pas.

After a short break (due to travel and then settling down at home), I start this new year (begining of a ‘new sanwatsar’ and ‘saal mubarak’ as they say in Gujarat today) reading this post on Sahir Saab on the blog today.
First of all many thanks to Sudhir ji for this post and this particular song…
Reading about Sahir Saab and his poetry … I am going to be very emotional and so I will be putting my comments as I progress through this write-up …
Yes, a poet whose poetry has touched every strand in the fabric of life, every passion, every sentiment of the human psyche…

Yes, It is more about the heart full of wealth of stirring emotions, after all
“seene mein koyi patthar to nahin, ehsaas kaa maaraa dil hi to hai”

Yes, A life that was expressive, enigmatic, combative. . . and so many more flavors that he lived through

and a big YES , yes it is something ‘Sahir’ like, that makes it different and distinguishing.
