Hullo Atuldom
A very very Happy Holi to all the followers of this wonderful blog. May there be lots of ‘rang and umang’ all around.
I have been following this blog for 13 years i.e. from March 2009. The head-over-heels involvement began almost instantly. I see that 66 songs, connected with this colourful festival, have been posted in all these years. I find a few songs showcasing the festival have been posted on ‘non-holi’ days too. So that must indicate that we will not have sufficient songs in coming years to post on festival days. But that is not so.
The film industry has been in existence since 1912/1913, and its romance with the festival of colours may have started almost immediately. (I did my own searching, on our blog, and found a post by Sudhirji where he has mentioned that “the songs of Holi go as far back as 1931.”)
A search on Google for the first song of Holi in Indian films came up with the song from Mehboob Khan’s “Aurat”. That song is on the blog with a post by Sudhirji which I have spoken of in the previous para. In that post he has written, and I quote
“As is inseparable, the festival of Holi and its songs from our lives, so it is also inseparable from the Hindi film screen. It is no wonder that the most celebrated of all the festivals on the Hindi screen is this festival of colors.” He also writes “In fact, many times, the situation of Holi is simply engineered into the storyline. Just so that one more song and dance sequence can be inserted into the screenplay.”
That being the love between the festival of colours and films, we will never run out of songs to post. I don’t remember the last time I wrote out a Holi-Song for the blog, but I recalled a few possible songs for the festival this year. And as is my habit I have tried to combine two occasions with this one post.
18th March would have been the 84th birthday of the smart, cute, gentleman actor Shashi Kapoor -of the charming smile. The DTH channel, that I currently follow, keeps playing interviews of yesteryear heroines like Moushumi Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, Zarina Wahab etc. All of them have one thing to say about this actor – “He was very gracious and courteous. Very caring and went out of his way to make the ladies comfortable”. He never had any qualms about acting the second lead and we know of his pairing with Amitabh Bachchan, but he was equally at ease sharing screen space with Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra etc. He may not have been the best of dancers, so what, he moved with a sense of rhythm and never seemed to miss a beat.
Today’s song is from the 1981 release “Ek Aur Ek Gyarah” that was directed by Ashok Roy. It had Neetu Singh, Zarina Wahab, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Prem Chopra, Om Prakash, P. Jairaj, Bharat Bhushan, Asrani, Master Bhagwan, etc in the cast. Laxmi-Pyare and Majrooh Sultanpuri were responsible for the music and produced by Ram Prasad Sharma. This holi-song is sung by Hemlata, Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. It has all the standard, filmy, elements needed viz. dry and wet colours, bhang, and eve-teasing too towards the end of the song. But we can also see the lady replying sternly to the guy that “joote maaroongi”. If we see the dance closely, at one point we have Shashi Kapoor desperately trying to match Neetu Singh step-for-step and breaking into some choreography of his own. A thing that always catches my attention in holi-songs is however wet the actors get their dresses are dry in the very next instant.
I must say that I have actively participated in the merry-making of Holi and I have never seen anyone go crazy yelling ‘holi hai’. I have never seen people breaking into song and dance about it. Possible that these things happen in Brij bhoomi, and parts of North India. I would like to tour that region during holi, if possible. Also I would like to see the Lath-Maar Holi of Nandgaon and Barsana.
Happy Holi to one and all once again.

Waah, what a song !! enjoyed this one a lot and I think this song deserves to be part of the ‘holi song compilations’. But, I don’t remember to have heard this song earlier. I am also forgetting about this movie. I am sure I have not watched this movie. Watching the song, Neetu Singh, Shashi Kapoor, Bhagwan, Om Prakash, Asrani and Zarina Wahab, all bring back memories. The composition and singing of this song is highly enjoyable and foot tapping.
I have never seen anyone go crazy yelling ‘holi hai’. I have never seen people….) I am surprised and I think that you must be part of ‘silent’ holis played around. For me ‘yelling’ starts with myself 🙂 and that too from home first and then continuing around 🙂 meeting people and celebrating oolours. I have always enjoyed a lot on ‘Holi’ 🙂
Many thanks for this ‘colorful’ post
Happy Holi !!!
Regards,
