‘Raaj Tilak’ (1958) was simultaneously shot in Hindi along with ‘Vanjikottai Valiban’ (1958) in Tamil. Both the films were produced and directed by S S Vasan under the banner of Gemini Pictures. While Gemini Ganesan, Vyjayantimala and Padmini were the common actors for both Hindi and Tamil films. Jagirdar, Bipin Gupta, Lalita Pawar, Durga Khote, Pran, Manmohan Krishna, Agha, Shammi, Meenakshi etc worked only in the Hindi version of the film. C Ramchandra composed the songs for both Tamil and Hindi films. The film was inspired from the novel, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ (1844) by Alexandre Dumas. Today’s song is from the film Madhubala-1950.
When I have no specific song or a film in mind to write about, I scan through the HFGK or the index of Film titles. When a name creates curiosity or interest, I go to the HFGK for details. My first choice is a singer whose style and songs I like. The second point is the Mukhda of the song to get an idea of the song. If these things evoke some feelings in me, I go through the later steps- like to find out if this is still not yet posted on the Blog, whether it is available on YouTube and if it is in full length etc etc.

Today’s song is from a totally unknown film Krishna Bhakta Bodana-1944.
This was a film made by Wadia Movietone, exclusively owned now by the elder brother J.B.H.Wadia, after the younger brother left this jointly owned company, to start his own outfit. Being a Gujarati Parsee, no wonder Wadia wanted to make a film on a lesser known Gujarati Saint to attract the Gujarati audience. The film was directed by J.B.H.Wadia himself – with a gap of 9 years i.e. after his last directed film Noor-E-Yaman-1935. In all he directed 15 films. His last film was Saaj aur Sanam-1971. During this 9 year gap period, he wrote film stories, produced films and did overall management of Wadia Movietone.

Today’s song is from the film Taqdeer-1943.
This was Mehboob Khan’s second film from his own studio-Mehboob productions. His first film was Najma-1943 (his own daughter’s name was Najma). That film was woven around a woman’s life. Similarly, his second film also was about a young girl. The girl was Nargis- making her Debut as an adult heroine (14 years) opposite the hero Motilal (age 33 years). The story was about lost children in Kumbh Mela and then found by unrelated people who bring them up, having lost their own. Sounds like a precursor to a Man Mohan Desai’s film ? Maybe it gave him an idea !

Hullo Atuldom
This is not planned as a “Blog Ten Year Challenge” post. It has just happened to be one.
Actually, I was humming a song most of yesterday, visited the blog to check if it had been posted yet and found a song from the same film had been posted exactly 10 years ago. I went a step further and found that there were 3 posts on “this date, that year”. Two of the three posts were by Sudhir ji; one post being his down-memory-lane of the Mumbai- Gangout that had a few Atulites meet in December of 2014. The post by Sudhir ji for the song “Boribunder Se Borivali Dekh Li Maine Gali Gali” was much more than a report of the gangout & the visit to Arunkumar Deshmukh ji’s residence by Atulites. It was also a nostalgia trip for readers who know of the various localities that he has mentioned in the post. I particularly like the (now invisible Atulite) Khyati Ben’s comment to the post. That post had Sudhir ji, talking of how he had stayed across the road from Arunkumarji’s residence, back in the late 1980s; but they were unaware of each other’s existence then, prompting (another invisible Atulite) Raja ji’s comment of how the post could well be the story of a Manmohan Desai film.

Today’s song is from the film Hunterwali ki Beti-1943. This is perhaps the only film in the world where the Heroine has done the role of a daughter, whose mother also was the same heroine in an earlier film. The Heroine fearless Nadia entered the world of Stunt films in India, with the hit film ” Hunterwali “-in 1935. After 8 years, she was doing the role of ‘Hunterwali ki beti’-1943, in this film ! Great indeed !!

Today’s song is from the first film of Filmistan Studio – Chal Chal Re Naujawan -1944.
A group of disgruntled employees – actors, directors, technicians etc -left their parent company studio, Bombay Talkies, in 1942 and established their own studio- Filmistan. In the year 1942, they were not the first or the only people to leave their parent studio and start their own ventures. There were many like them.
