#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————
(Lyricist Kavi Pradeep-48)
—————————–
Today’s song is from the movie ‘Preet Ka Geet’ from the year 1950, which means that this movie is around seventy-five years old now. Kavi Pradeep is the lyricist for this song.
“Preet Ka Geet-1950” was directed by Girish Trivedi for ‘Kalaakaar Chitra, Bombay’. The cast of this movie, as mentioned in Geet Kosh Vol-II, are Sulochana Chatterjee, Prem Adeeb, Gulab, Shashikala, Cuckoo, Badri Prasad, Shyam Sundar, M. Khanjar, Urvashi and others. Music for this movie was composed by Shyam Babu Pathak. This movie has eleven songs. They were penned by Kavi Pradeep and Premi. Geet Kosh mentions lyricist Premi’s name for five songs. However it does not identify the songs written by Kavi Pradeep with his name and has left the lyricist name blank for the remaining six songs.

Today’s song is from a 72 year old Costume film- Shamsheer-1953.
Though the film was made by Sargam Pictures, Bombay, after completion of the film, all the rights were purchased by Bombay Talkies – which was already sinking and was unable to make films on its own. Just to save Bombay Talkies, all the current and ex employees of the company got together and made a film- Baadbaan-1954. However, this could not save Bombay Talkies and it was sold to Tolaram Jalani.
Film Shamsheer-1953 was directed by Gyan Mukherjee. It had 2 MDs- Arun Kumar Mukherjee and Anupam Ghatak. There were 3 Lyricists. The cast was Ashok Kumar, Bhanumathy, Smriti Biswas, Rama Shukul, Nana Palshikar, Mehmood, Bhagwan and many others.

Sometime in early 1980s, I had heard a non-film song, ‘mohe aayee na jag se laaj…..ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ which was rendered by Pankaj Udhas. At that time, I did not think much about this song but its hook line ‘ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ periodically reminded me of the song. After the death of Pankaj Udhas in 2024, his old non-film songs started ‘bumping up’ on the video sharing platforms during which I heard this song in full after many years and liked it, more so because of its lyrics. Since then, I was planning to cover this non-film song for the Blog. But I was not sure about the genesis of this song, particularly when I came to know that the song was written by Pakistani poet and lyricist, Qateel Shifai. So, I kept the song in hold until I got some clarity about it. After doing some reseach on the internet, I am now in a position to write the article on the song.
