“Baaghi”(1964) was produced by R L Suri and directed by Ram Dayal for Mukul Movies, Bombay. This movie had Pradeep Kumar, Leela Naidu,Mumtaz, Veena, Jayant, Hiralal, Jeevan, Vijaya Chowdhary, Jagdeep, Helen, Madhumati, Mridula, Ulhas, Naaz, Rajan Haksar etc in it.
A poor quality video of this movie is available online. Our inhouse expert Sadanand Kamath jee patiently went through this video full of video cuts, parts of videos being in incorrect order etc. He patiently deciphered the story of the movie which is given below:
A boy is crushed under the wheel of Vazir-e-Azam, Jaffer’s (Jayant) chariot but is unrepentant in front of his mother (Veena) as he says that whoever comes on his way will be crushed. Jaffer reaches his palace where King Ali Jaan’s (Hiralal’s) Begum, who is Jaffer’s sister, is on the death bed. She wants a promise from Jaffer that her daughter, Firdosh will get married to his son, Akram. Jaffer tells her that they are still children. He promises her to get them married when they grow up, However, before she dies, she wants to see Akram, whom she has not seen for a long time. Jaffer goes to bring Akram from his room and is shocked to find him missing from the bed. There is a message on a paper that his son is abducted by the father of the child crushed to death to teach Jaffer a lesson as to how he feels when his own child is lost. To fulfil his sister’s wish, Jaffer takes Yusuf, the son of his Orderly (Rajan Haksar) to show to his sister as Akram. But before he takes him to his sister, she dies. Jaffer adopts Yusuf as Akram and sends him far away to his grandmother’s house.
The abducted Akram grows up under Aayesha (Veena) and her husband, Abba Jaan (Ulhas) as Habib (Pradeep Kumar). He is trained in horse riding and the use of weapons by Abba Jaan. Now he is leading a group of baaghi (rebels) to fight against the cruel rule of Vazir-e-Azam Jaffer. Habib gets information from his spy that some of the rebels from his group who are already under the custody of Jaffer are being executed. Habib takes his group and marches to the palace of Jaffer. In a surprise attack, Habib and his men release most of his rebels and abduct Princess Firdosh (Leela Naidu) to their secret den. Habib puts a condition for a safe passage of Princess Firdosh back to the palace provided one of his rebel friends, Abdulla (Jagdeep) is released from the custody.
Abdulla does get released from the custody and Princess Firdosh goes back to the palace accompanied by Shabnam (Mumtaz). Firdosh likes Shabnam and employs her as an assistant. She stays in the palace. However, Firdosh is unaware of the fact that she is a member of the rebel group who was sent with Firdosh to do spying work for Habib. After release, Abdulla visits Mamu Jaan (Jeevan) ostensibly to meet his niece, Gulbadan (Vijaya Chowdhary). They are in love with each other, but Mamu Jaan does not approve of Abdulla.
King Ali Jaan reminds Jaffer of his promise to get Akram married to Princess Firdosh, since both have now grown up. Jaffer has not seen Yusuf/Akram since he was sent to his grandmother’s place to keep him safe from the rebels. After 20 years, he will be coming to the palace via waadi-e-gul (valley of flowers). Shabnam sends this secret message to Habib via pigeon. Her assessment is that with the wedding of Yusuf/Akram with Princess Firdosh, the power of Vazir-e-Azam, Jaffer will go up as Yusuf/Akram would be the next king in waiting.
When Habib was reading the message, Abba Jaan, who has abducted Akram in his childhood and now grown up under his guidance as Habib, is surprised because the real Akram is none other than Habib. He sees it as a ploy to get control of the kingdom. He orders Habib to intercept Yusuf/Akram at waadi-e-gul and take his place by disguising himself as Akram since neither Jaffer nor King Ali Jaan have seen him for the last 20 years. Habib reaches the palace impersonating Yusuf/Akram and meets Jaffer.
Jaffer takes Akram/Habib to King Ali Jaan when Princess Firdosh and Shabnam join them. Even though Firdosh has recognised Habib, she keeps quiet as she is already in love with him. The betrothal ceremony of Firdosh and Habib/Akram is completed after which a dance programme is in progress when Yusuf/Akram turns up and Habib’s impersonation is exposed. There is a fierce sword fight between Habib and the palace guards. Somehow, Firdosh gets Habib hidden in her chamber through which he escapes from the palace.
Jaffer feels that the secret of the palace is getting leaked to Habib and his rebels. So, Jaffer and Akram/Yusuf plant a misinformation that they are transporting the treasure to the palace. This gets leaked to the rebels now under the command of Abba Jaan since Habib has gone underground. They march to intercept the treasure. The fierce fighting between the rebels and Jaffer’s troops takes place. But rebels find that all the horse carts which were supposed to carry treasures turn out to be carriers of Jaffer’s troops. As a result, there are heavy casualties for rebels in which Abba Jaan gets killed.
Habib turns up at his mother’s house. He reorganises the rebel groups and follows the same misinformation strategy which Jaffer has followed. This time, acting on the tip from Mamu Jaan, Jaffer’s troops march to Rebels hide out only to be surrounded by them and incur high casualties. Jaffer’s suspicion of a spy in the palace gets strengthened with this defeat from rebels. The suspicion falls on Shabnam because she is the niece of Mamu Jaan who has passed on this misinformation to Jaffer.
Habib marches to the palace in disguise to save Shabnam as her capture by Jaffer not only will expose rebels secrets but also she will be treated very cruelly. When he enters Firdosh’s chamber where Shabnam stays, King Alia Jaan with his orderly turns up. Shabnam’s presence of mind saves the situation as she introduces Habib as her husband who has come here to pick up her. With this, both Habib and Shabnam escape from the palace to rebel’s hideout. Later, it becomes apparent that Habib has come in disguise to take back Shabnam. But the event creates a doubt in the mind of Firdosh whether Habib is really married to Shabnam.
Taking advantage of confusion in the mind of Firdosh, Yusuf/Akram takes Firdosh for a stroll in a chariot. When they get down from the chariot for strolling in the garden, Habib suddenly pounces on Yusuf/Akram and ties him to a tree. Firdosh confronts Habib as to why he has not told about his relationship with Shabnam. Habib clears her doubt and reveals the reasons for turning himself as a rebel against the kingdom run by Jaffer for which he gives her the many evidences. Firdosh is convinced and she offers herself to join his rebel forces. But Habib asks her to continue in the palace, which will be advantageous for him to get the secrets. Also to fight with Jaffer, the rebel forces require a lot of ammunition. He entrusts her to find out the location of the ammunition store of the kingdom and pass on the information to him. She does that and invites Habib to visit her. This is not liked by Aayesha, Shabnam and Abdulla as they see it as a trap for Habib. But he disregards their opposition and visits the palace.
Habib goes with Firdosh inside the underground ammunition storage. However, they find themselves surrounded by King Ali Jaan, Jaffer, Yusuf/Akram and other guards. Habib is chained while Yusuf/Akram thanks Firdosh for passing on the information to capture him. Actually, this is the ploy played by Yusuf/Akram to discredit Firdosh in the eyes of Habib. Jaffer is tortured to reveal the location of his rebels. But he stays firm.
In the royal palace, the wedding ceremony of Firdosh with Yusuf/Aktar is about to start. However, Firdosh is missing from her chamber. Jaffer knows that the only place to find Firdosh is the underground ammunition storage place where Habib is chained. They all reach there with troops and arrest Firdosh. Since Habib has not revealed the hide out of the rebels, he is being entombed alive when Aayesha reaches the royal palace pleading for pardon to Habib. She reveals that Habib is Vazir-e-Azam, Jaffer’s son Akram who was abducted by her husband as revenge for killing his child under Jaffer’s chariot. After getting fully convinced, Jaffer is repentant and orders Habib and Firdosh to be released, But Yusuf does not like their release. He kills Jaffer and absconds with Firdosh in his chariot. On the way, he is stopped by Shabnam who also gets killed under his chariot. In the meantime, the rebel forces in thousands have entered the royal palace. They set free Habib (now Akram) who swiftly followed in his horse the route taken by Yusuf. They meet and fight at the table top during which Yusuf falls to death in the deep valley. Akram and Firdosh are united with King Ali Jaan, and Aayesha. Even though Jaffer is not alive, the promise to his late sister is fulfilled.
