‘Alladin And The Wonderful Lamp/Adventures of Alladin’ (1978) was produced and directed by Homi Wadia under the banner of Basant Pictures.

The cast included Sachin, Naazneen, Jaishree T, Raza Murad, Paintal, Sudhir, Razvi, Kanchan Mattoo, Vandana Shashtri, Sunil Dhawan, Hercules, Habib , Sheikh etc. The film was a remake of Homi Wadia’s own film, ‘Aladdin Aur Jaadui Chiraag’ (1952).

Interestingly, the gramophone records of the songs were issued with the film’s title, ‘Alladin And The Wonderful Lamp’. The Censor Certificate was issued under the film’s title, ‘Alladin Aur Jaadui Chiraag in Hindi and ‘Alladin And The Wonderful Lamp’ in English. However, in the credit title of the film, the film’s name was changed to ‘Adventures of Alladin (Alladin Ke Kaarnaame). This was the last film directed by Homi Wadia, Thereafter, he produced his last film, ‘Mahabali Hanuman’ (1980).

The story of ‘Alladin and the Wonderful Lamp’ has been one story of ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ that has fascinated Indian film makers the most. The other one is ‘Alibaba and Forty Thieves’. The inspiration for the Indian film makers came from the tremendous success of the American film, ‘The Thief of Baghdad’ (1924) which was also released in British India. This led to making a new genre of films called ‘Fantasy’ – from silent films to talky films. Many versions of this ‘fantasy’ films were made in India mainly during 1930s to 1960s. The craze for making ‘jaadui’ films declined after 1970s.

The story of the film is as under:

The film starts with magician Samri (Raza Murad) seeking the help of Genie (Hercules) to get the magic lamp. Genie reveals that the magic lamp is lying in a poisonous tunnel full of dangerous obstacles on the way. More importantly, only an honest man who has 21 black moles on his right arm can successfully retrieve the magic lamp. Samri is in search of such a person in the kingdom.

In the kingdom, Alladin (Sachin) is living with his mother (Vandana Shashtri) and is expert in sword fighting and horse riding. Baglol (Paintal) has been his family friend. One day, Alladin goes inside a stable where royal horses are kept. He is arrested by the royal soldiers for trespassing with the intention of poisoning the Simraan’s (Sudhir) horse. In the court of Sultan (Razvi), the punishment for Alladin is to compete in horse riding with Simraan. If he wins, there will be no punishment for him. The winner will also get 1000 dinars as the prize money. Alladin wins the race and the prize money which he wins gives back to Sultan to be distributed among the poor. Alladin wins admiration from the crowd as well as from Shehzadi Badr (Naazneen), the daughter of Sultan. Baglol has got attracted to Shehzadi’s chief attendant, Sophia (Jayshree T).

The wicked Vazir, Zamrood (Sunil Dhawan) has kept the real Sultan under house arrest and in his place a cobbler with similar face has been installed as a dummy Sultan to keep the citizens of the kingdom under wrap. The condition for the release of the real Sultan is that Shehzadi Badr should be married to Vazir’s son, Simraan. But Sultan is adamant and rejects Vazir’s demand.

On the day of procession of Shehzadi on palanquin, citizens are not allowed to be on the path of procession. However, Alladin deliberately violates the rules. During the procession, both Alladin and Shehzadi see each other admirably but she refrains from revealing to his procession careers about the presence of Alladin. Simraan has started feeling that Alladin is an obstacle in achieving his goal of marrying Shehzadi. So, on some flimsy ground, he gets Alladin arrested and is put in prison awaiting punishment of 100 lashes on the next day followed by his externment. Shehzadi meets Alladin in prison and expresses her love for him.

The next day when Alladin was given lashes in the public place, the magician Samri sees 21 moles in his right hand. He is delighted and meets Alladin after completion of his lashes. He introduces himself as his uncle having left his father many years back. He says that he recognised him as Alladin because of 21 moles on his right arm. Samri assures him that he would help him for taking revenge against all wrong doers provided he helps him to reach a tunnel to get hidden treasure by which he can fight with them. His only demand is to get for him an old lamp.

Alladin agrees. Both Alladin and Samri take their arduous journey to reach the opening of the tunnel. After successfully crossing many obstacles in the tunnel, Alladin comes across an old lamp and an old lady. He revives the old lady in her original shape by lighting the lamp. She introduces herself as Princess Parizad (Kanchan Mattoo) and reveals him that Samri had put her in this tunnel making her an old woman through his magic. She warns him not to hand over the lamp to Samri. She also gives him a magical ring which will help him in case he gets into any trouble. With this, she departs to her fairyland.

After returning to the base of the tunnel, Samri asks Alladin to hand over the lamp to him. Alladin says that he will come out of the tunnel and then hand over the lamp to him. Annoyed with Alladin, Samri closes the exit of the tunnel and walks away. Alladin is trapped in the tunnel and he does not know how to come out. Accidentally, the old lamp in hand gets brushed and a Genie appears who says that he is at his service. Alladin asks him to first take him to meet his mother.

In Alladin’s house, his mother is worried as Baglol has returned empty ended with the news that after seven days of search, he could not locate Alladin. At that very moment, the Genie drops Alladin in his house and his mother and Baglol are surprised. He reveals to them that he has reached here because of the lamp. He calls Genie and orders for converting his house into a palace and for arranging the exotic food for them. Soon his house gets converted in a palace and exotic food is served.

In the Sultan’s palace, Shehzadi Badr’s birthday party has been arranged where there is a qawwali concerts. Both Alladin and Baglol join the party disguising as qawwali singers. Shehzadi and Sophia get hints from qawwali singers as to who they are. During the birthday party, the dummy Sultan announces the marriage of Shehzadi Badr with Simraan which Shehzadi rejects outright. With this, Alladin gets an indirect hint that she is in love with him. One day, Alladin secretly meet Shehzadi when she openly tells him that she will marry him. At that time, Simraan sees them together. He gets Alladin arrested and put in a cell.

Parizad helps with her magic pearls which enable Baglol to let Alladin escape from the cell. While escaping they come to know that Vazir has confined the real Sultan in a underground cell and his look-like has been made a dummy Sultan. With the help of the Genie, Alladin brings the real Sultan to his house. After knowing the background from the real Sultan, Alladin assures him that he would ensure to restore him in the kingdom as Sultan.

In a sword dual, Alladin defeats Simraan who accidentally kills his father who is the Vazir. The thorn of the kingdom is restored to the real Sultan who orders arrest of Simraan who has escaped after accidentally killing his father. The Sultan gets Shehzadi Badr married to Alladin and Sophia to Baglol.

Once Alladin is out of his palace, the magician Samri visits his place in the guise of a trader exchanging old lamp with new one. Sophia is not aware that the old lamp lying in the palace is a magical lamp. She gives the same to Samri. With the magic lamp in his hand, Samri orders Genie to transfer the palace with Shehzadi Badr to a far-off place and tries to woo Shehzadi. Simraan, who has been absconding, reaches the palace and fight with Samri to save Shehzadi Badr. However, he is killed by Samri.

In the meanwhile, Alladin with his magic ring, locates Shehzadi Badr who by now started acting as if she is in love with Samri to save Alladin’s mother. Alladin and Baglol arrives at the palace. During a long fight, Samri gets drowned in a waterfall. Alladin orders the Genie to restore his palace at the original place. Sultan unites with Shehzadi Badr and Alladin. They all live together peacefully.

The film had four songs written by Kafil Azar (2) and Naqsh Lyallpuri (2) which were set to music by Chitragupt. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, a qawwali, ‘bandaa parwar mohabbat kaa salaam le lije’ to appear on the Blog. The qawwali is rendered by Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey and Anuradha Paudwal on the lyrics of Kafil Azar.

The context of the song is that Shehzadi Badr is celebrating her birthday. Simraan (Sudhir), the wicked Vazir’s son has invited a team of qawwali singers to perform on the occasion. This news becomes known to Alladin (Sachin) who along with Baglol (Paintal) disguising themselves as qawwali singers, perform at the birthday celebrations in which the dummy Sultan (Razvi), Simraan, Shehzadi Badr (Naazneen), Sophia (Jaysree T) are in the audience. Sophia dances to the qawwali. Towards the end, Shehzadi Badr joins in singing. Apparently, after the qawwali performance, Alladin and Baglol get exposed and as a punishment, Alladin is required to fight with Simraan in a sword fighting competition to be held later.
