The movie also had Anand Joshi, Kirti Kumar, Rajan Kapoor, Narbada Shankar, A.N.Malhotra, Bhagwan Sinha, Deepak, R.Yadav, Dijendra Banerjee, Ramesh Deo etc in it.

“Aaj Ka Mahatma” (1976) had four songs in it. Three songs have been covered in the past.

The first song was presented by Satyajit Rajurkar jee who also gave the story of the movie as well as his experience of watching this movie. He, staying in Hyderabad passed his school and joined Junior College and watched this movie in the intervening period. From the comments, it is seen that Dr Pradep Kumar Shetty did likewise pass his school and joined junior college in the neighbouring state of Karnataka. He did notwatch the movie but recalls listening to the songs of this movie on radio, a luxury that was taken away from him when he joined the hostel of his college where radios were banned.

In that comment, Dr Shetty wondered if Lata Mangeshkar had sung many songs for Bindu. Prakashchandra, our inhouse expert of these matters, reeled off a list of several such songs.

The second song was covered by me as part of my series of Lata Mangeshkar yearwise breakup of songs. This song was presented in the 30th part of that series that ran for 63 parts.

The third song was presented by me on 19th july 2025 on the occasion of Blog’s birthday. In this writeup I recalled the fact that this song was noted down by me in my song diary that also had the scorecard of the 1976 test match played between India and West Indies, where India won scoring 406 runs in the fourth innings.

When I think about it, 1976, when all this happened was 50 years ago. Half a century has elapsed from that time. 😲

There are only four songs in this movie, and the movie itself is a forgottenmovie, but it is of nostalgic value to a few regulars of the blog.😊

Satyajit Rajurkar jee had given the story of this movie which coveing the first song. Here is his take on the movie:-

Randhir and Ranvir Verma are twins. Randhir is straightforward, while Ranvir is a petty criminal. These petty thefts add up, and soon the police arrest Ranvir, and he is sentenced to prison. In prison, Ranvir incurs the wrath of a gangster, Tony, and is killed. Randhir undertakes to find the killer, and gets himself arrested, and imprisoned to get to see who the killer is. After getting out from prison, Randhir plans to avenge his brother’s death, without knowing that he himself could endanger his very life, as well the life of his girlfriend, Mala. The song “Chandni chand se hoti hai, sitaron se nahin, pyar bhi ek se hota hai hazaron se nahin…” is still popular.

Here is the fourth and final song of the movie. It is sung by Kishore Kumar. It is picturised as a villain’s den song as far as I can tell, where Randhir Kapoor is disguised as a Sheikh. Rekha is seen giving a cabarat dance. Youngsters, who have seen Rekha in her post “Ghar”(1978) avatar may wonder how Rekha was doing these kindsof roles. She was immature and she was goingtheway of Faryal, that is what movie reviewers of those days opined about Rekha. Fortunately, Rekha gained maturity, reinvented herself in 1978 and never looked back since. Randhir Kapoor sadly could not do likewise and after a few more movies lie this his career was over.

Picturisation of this song also shows Keshto Mukherjee and Bindu, among others.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

With this song, all the four songs of “Aaj Ka Mahatma”(1976) are covered in the blog. This movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Incidentally, this movie is the 200th movie whose title begins with A that has been YIPPEED in the blog.
