Alphabetical list of actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice- Part XIV

In the first thirteen episodes of the series, we listed actresses whose names begin with the first thirteen letters of the alphabet and who had lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. Then we went on to cover a song that was lip synced by another acresses whose name began with the same letter and who had not lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.
The exercise of finding a “new” actress whose name begins with a particular letter is being increasingly difficult. The three “new” actresses who made their debuts in the blog (as far as lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is concerned) were Anju Mahendru, Bhanupriya, Chandrakala,Divya Bharati, Ekta,Farheen,Gulnar Irani,Harsha Mehra,Isha Koppikar,Jasmine,Khushboo, Laila and Madhavi.
In this episode, we arrive at the fourteenth letter N. The letter N has thrown up good number of Hindi film actresses. As many as 25 actresses whose name begin with N have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. The list includes some iconic names as we will as some names that few people may have heard of.

We notice that iconic stars viz Nargis and Nutan, and famous stars like Nimmi, Nalini Jaiwant, Nirupa Roy, Neetu Singh have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. On the other end of the spectrum are actresses whose names are not known to vast majority of movie buffs.
Regulars who have been following this series may have noticed that almost all actresses famous as well as obscure, who were active till 1970s and who lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice have been represented in that capacity in the blog. So when I have to introduce “new” actresses who have not lip synced songs in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog, I have to look for songs of the later decades, viz 1980s, 1990s and even later decades.
When I was wondering who are the as yet unreprsented actresses who fitted the bill, Prakashchandra sent me a few names. One of them made her debut in Hindi movies in 1970s and she got to sing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the decade of 1970s itself. That way, this song has to be the “oldest” song in the series, and the first song of 1970s.
The song under discussion is from the movie “Gangadham”(1980). It was produced by Vishwanath Prasad and directed by B S Thapa for Nirmal Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Arun Govil, Namita Chandra, Om Shiv Puri, Kanhaiya Lal, Sonia Sahni,Shakti Kapoor, Raj Mehra,Baby Shalu, Master Romi,Manmohan Krishna etc in it.
This movie, though not a Rajshree production movie, was similar to the movies that Rajshree Productions used to produce, where story and music and simple stories would attract the audience. These movies did not have stars. New comers would be cast in lead roles. The target audience for such movies were moviegoers of small towns in general and moviegoers of Bihar and Eastern UP in particular.
“Gangadham”(1980) had Arun Govil and Namita Chandra in lead roles. They had made their debuts in “Paheli”(1977), where Namita Chandra was the heroine and Arun Govil was in a lesser role.
“Gangadham”(1980) had seven songs in it. Unlike Rajshree Productions movies where Ravindra Jain would be the lyricist cum music director and Hemlata would sing for female lead, here Indeewar was the lyricist and Sapan Jagmohan composed music. Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Suresh Wadkar, Pankaj Mitra and Sushma Shreshtha were the playback singers in this movie.
Asha Bhonsle had sung three songs in this movie.
Here is a song from this movie which is sung by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhonsle. This song is picturised on Arun Govil and Namita Chandra.
With this song, the movie “Gangadham”(1980) makes its debut in the blog. Namita Chandra is present in the blog lipsyncing in Hemlata’s voice. With this song, she becomes the latest actress (whose name begins with N )lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.
With the letter N done and dusted, the next episode of this series should be O. But there seem to be no actresses in Hindi movies whose names begin with O. When I thought about it, I could not think of any Indian female name that starts with O. It seems to be that female names beginning with O can be found only is Russia (Olga, for example) and not in most parts of the world. So the next letter in this series would be P. There are 17 actresses whose names beging with P and who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.
For now, here is this nice hummable song from “Gangadham”(1980). I heard this song for the first time only today.

Nice to see the N-supplement of the Asha Bhosle series.
Again there are many names which are totally unknown to me, viz., Neelu Arora, Neena, Neera Sameer, and Neeta Khayani. The songs sung by them on screen were also new to me naturally.
Nigar Sultana has also lip-synced to Asha Bhosle’s song and is represented on the blog with the song from Mastana (1954) Raja ka haathi le le. If possible, please add her to the list.

Nauheed Cyrusi: Offho Jalta Hai from Lakeer (2004)

Neha Dhupia: Sharaabiyon from Teesri Aankh (2006)
Nuton: Mera Naam Pannabai from Aar Paar (1985). She is a Bangladeshi actress.
There are two actresses from Hindi films whose name start with an ‘O’. One is Odette Ferguson, who is most probably British. She starred in Mayur Pankh (1954), but she didn’t get to move her lips to any song. Then there is the actress Oviya, who works mostly in Tamil and Malayalam films, but she has also starred in a Hindi film called Yeh Ishq Sarfira (2015). Both of them could have potentially (I mean time-wise) sung an Asha Bhosle song in their respective films, but they didn’t.

Thanks for your detailed comment, including names of unrepresented actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. If all these actresses get represented, the number of N actresses will be over 30.
Thanks for pointing out the name of Nigar Sultana. On checking, I realised that she has lip synced in not one but three songs in the blog in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. I have now included her in the list.

After reading Atulji’s post yesterday, I also looked up actresses who have names from ‘O’ I didn’t find Odette Ferguson but I did find Oviya who’s real name is Helen Nelson. She has majorly worked in Tamil, Malayalam & Kannada films and only one Hindi film, the one you have mentioned. There is also one Femina Miss India world (2008) Parvathy Omanakuttan- but the ‘O’ is in her second name. So, I don’t think she qualifies.
Just for adding my two-bit, Parvathy Omanakuttan acted in 3 Hindi films, 2 of them in the period when Ashatai was still actively recording. But she was not fortunate to get Ashatai as her playback voice Another discovery yesterday, there are a few actresses in Malayalam & Tamil films who’s names are starting in ‘O’

Yes we are in the region of alphabets, where there are many Indian female names. I am sure the letter S will break all records. But after that there will be lean pickings, I presume. Another actress, who I thought would be represented in the list, is Nilofer. I searched for any song of hers, which was sung by Asha Bhosle, but couldn’t find any.

Parvathy Omanakuttan is a name totally unfamiliar for me. Thank you for introducing me to her.
What a pity that Odette, Oviya and Omanakuttan didn’t get a chance to move their lips to Asha Bhosle’s song.

There are a few Indian female names starting with the letter O.
Obavva is a legend in the history of Karnataka. Called Onake Obavva . Lived during the times of Chitradurga ruler Madakari Nayaka. Died protecting the Chitradurga fort during the attack by Hyder Ali…1779. Beautifully narrated in a song in the Kannada movie NAGARAHAVU, 1972. Kannada nadina veera ramaniya…. ( ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡಿನ ವೀರ ರಮಣಿಯಾ ).
Oorja, Ojaswini, Ojal, Omkari, Oorvashi( alternate spelling for Urvashi ) are a few rare names.
