Lootera (1965) is a story of pirates and princesses. It is a B grade action drama, with a star cast that includes Dara Singh, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nishi, Helen, Hiralal, Jeevan, Maruti, Bela Bose and others. The music of this movie is simply superb. All songs of this movie are very hummable and well known. And all songs, except one, are rendered by Lata Mangeshkar.

“Anita”(1967) is a movie starring Manoj Kumar and Sadhana. it was the third part of a trilogy of mystery woman movie that Raj Khosla made. The other two being Wo Kaun Thi and Mera Saayaa. But much has changed by 1967 when this movie was released. But much had changed in all these years. Sadhana, who looked so pretty and stunning with a glowing face, had lost much of her facial glow and charm following some illness. This movie, to the best of my knowledge, was not as much of a success as the other two movies.

Ajit Merchant, a leading music director for Gujarati films and for the theatre world in Bombay, passed away about 4 months ago (18th March, 2011). He was 80 plus. Although better known for his work in the Gujarati cinema, he did compose music for Hindi movies, albeit a small number. By some accounts, his offerings in the Hindi film world number less than 10. An accomplished music director, Ajit Merchant gave a first important break to a struggling Jagjit Singh in the late 60s. Raj Kapoor was also a fan of Ajit Merchant. It is said that after hearing the song “mari ankh no afini tara roop no bandhani . . .” (from the Gujarati film “Divadndi” he requested Shankar Jaikishan also to listen to it. The result of this reference was the song “Mera joota hai japaani” from film Shri 420, based on the tune of the Gujarati song.

When the lyrics and details of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra,I thought that he must have made a mistake as I have definitely posted this well known Rafi song in the blog. On checking, I found that I had not discussed this song, rather I had discussed the other well known song from this movie sung by Mukesh (Main dhoondhta hoon jinko ).

When one watches Hindi movies of the past, including their songs, and compare them with the present time, one notices that people back then had too much of time and patience. Means of instant communications were not there. People (namely the lady or parents) who will have their beloved husband/son gone to a distant place for work, will not hear from him for years, and they will patiently wait. One can not imagine people to have this kind of time and patience in today’s world.
