NURSE (1943), also known as CHHOTI MAA, was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Khursheed, Arun Ahuja, Prabha, Anil Kumar, Indira, Sheikh etc. From the title of the film, I thought that it was a heroine oriented film. But after reading the synopsis of the film given by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh as comments in one of the songs of the film, it was clear that it was more of a family drama than the story on the life of a nurse. Let me recapitulate a gist of the story given by him in the Blog:

Today’s song is a typical Kishore Kumar song from the film Jhumroo(1961). I have selected this song for two reasons. One, any song of Kishore Kumar-before the 70s- is loved by me and Two, this song has revived the memories of my college days.

Most readers of the Blog may recall the high publicity blitz that preceded the release of Hema Malini’s first Hindi film ‘Sapnon Ka Saudagar’. In the publicity, she was referred to as ‘dream girl’. The film failed at the box office but thereafter Hema Malini’s Hindi film career was firmly launched and established.

THE SECRETARY (1938) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Madhuri, Trilok Kapoor, Charlie, Kalyani, Begg, Wahidan Bai, Rajkumari etc. The film was based on a story written by Gunvantrai Acharya, one of the most prolific novelists in Gujarati language. By the way, I observe that Gunvantrai Acharya wrote story and screen play for films directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi for Ranjit Movietone like Gorakh Aaya (1938), Musaafir (1940) and Sasural (1941). Both came to Ranjit Movietone after their stints with journalism in Gujarati newspapers. Incidentally, all the three films and the film under discussion had Gyan Dutt as the music director.

DIL KI BAAT (1944) is an obscure film that I came to know about only after I got hold of the mp3 clip of a song from the film. I had never heard of the film AANDHI (1940) until I came across a couple of mp3 audio clips of the songs from the film. It was more surprising for me when I came to know that the film was from the stable of New Theatres Ltd. Of course, the film was produced under the banner of Associated Productions Ltd, probably an associate or subsidiary of the New Theatres. The film was directed by Dinesh Ranjan Das, a name I heard for the first time. The star cast included Pankaj Mullick and Mollina Devi in lead roles supported by Nemo, Shreelekha, Manjari, Muzamil, K C Dey etc.
