“Desh Premi” (1982) was one movie that I actually liked rather whole heartedly, but it appears that I was once again in the minority. While Manmohan Desai movies that I disliked turned out to be big hits, this movie was regarded as a damp squib at the box office.

“Saudagar” (1973) was the debut movie for Ravindra Jain as a music director. He wrote the lyrics too. This was a Rajshree productions movie where they were known to sign up newcomers. And for this movie they had signed by Amitabh Bachchan ! It is strange to see Amitabh Bachchan playing a villager ( far cry from his action roles) wearing striped lungi throughout the movie.

Hrishikesh Mukherji watched a Japanese movie in a film festival and he was so influenced by that movie that he made it into a Bollywood movie called “Anand”(1970) which won critical acclaim and was liked by moviegoers as well. In fact, Hrishikesh Mukherji was so enamoured by this theme that he himself remade his own remake into “Mili”.

“The Great Gambler” was an Amitabh Bachchan movie that was pronounced a damp squib when it was released in 1979. That came as a surprise to me because I found it a more watchable movie than many of the supposedly successful Amitabh Bachchan movies like “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”, “Suhaag” etc.
