“Swaami”(1977) is a movie that was produced by Hema Malini’s mother (Jaya Chakravarty) and this movie had Girish Karnad and Shabana Azmi in lead roles. Though none of the people involved were of Bengal background, but this movie was based on the backdrop of Bengal.

In Bollywood movies, most songs are lip synced on screen by actors. But there are some songs that are played on the background and the actors on the screen are not required to lip sync these songs. I have posted quite a few songs of this nature. All these days, I failed to realise that I should categorise these songs as background songs.

S D Burman was not only an outstanding music director, he had a unique singing voice too which he utilised very fruitfully. He would sing sparingly, but the few songs that he sang all went on to become immortal.

Sau baar janam lenge

There are many songs picturised on a man with a female voice singing in the background, viz “Gumnaam”, “Bees saal baad” etc. In this song, it is just the reverse. Here it is a female who is seen walking near a waterfall and the male voice singing in the background. This song “sau baar janam lenge” is in the same league as “Gumnaam” song “Gumnaam hai koyi”. It is just as haunting and creates similar kind of atmosphere.

Chal ri sajni ab kya soche

I have posted two songs from “Bambai ka Babu” in this blog, and readers will agree that both of them were great songs. But as far as Binaca geetmala of 1960 was concerned, the most popular song from this movie was yet another song viz ” Chal ri sajni ab kya soche”.
