In March last year, when Atul ji had posted the wonderful melody “Apne Khayaalon Ko Samjha Deejiye. . .”, from the 1955 film ‘Marine Drive’, I was instantly bowled over by this stunning sound that I had then heard for the first time. And it went on to reinforce, the lofty stature of N Dutta, the music director of this film, as one of the most talented composers from the 50s and 60s.

Marine Drive was a Sippy Films Production. It was produced and directed by G P Sippy. The movie had Ajit, Bina Rai, K.N.Singh, Vijayalaxmi, Johnny Walkar, Yakub, Om Prakash, Tuntun, Mohana, Anwar Hussain, Hari Shivdasani, Rajan Kapoor, Jankidas, Roopmala etc in it.

Tu kahaan kho gaya baalam matwaara

Bar dance in Hindi movies began in 1950s. These dances typically were “western” in nature and they were mostly performed by dancers like Cuckoo, Helen, etc. There were cases when leading ladies like Geeta Bali, Madhubala etc too would perform such bar dances. Such dances were popularly known as cabarat dance.

Suhaani shaam aayi hai kisi ke aane se

Today (19 august) is the death anniversary of Utpal Dutt (29 march 1929- 19 august 1993). In Hindi movie he typically played a comedian or character actor and I do not think he may have ever got any song to lip sync. So any songs that I want to discuss will necessarily will have to be a song where Utpal Dutt is present, without doing any lip syncing.

“Taxi Driver” (1954) was one of the earliest production of Navketan. This slickly produced movie was directed by Chetan Anand. The movie had Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartik, Sheila Ramani, Johnny Walker, Parveen Kaul, Hamid, Rashid Khan, Vernon Corke, Ratan Gaurang etc in it.

“Maai Baap” (1957) is often confused with “Maa Baap”(1959). “Maai Baap” (1957) was a Sadiq Production movie. It was produced and directed by M Sadiq. The movie had Johny Walker, Shyama, Minoo Mumtaz, Nazir Hussain, Raj Mehra, S. N. Banerjee, etc in it. “Maa Baap”(1959) on the other hand was a Ratandeep Productions movie. It was directed by V M Vyas and the movie had Rajendra Kumar, Kamini Kadam, Bipin Gupta, Rajendra Kumar, Anwar, Kumar, Naaz, Kuldip Kaur, Peace Kanwal, Romi, Leela Misra, Sunder, Pran, Leela Chitnis etc in it.
