Today’s song is an evergreen Bhajan by Mohammad Rafi, from the film ‘Narsi Bhagat’-57. The Music Director was Ravi-one of the few composers in HFM, who could be equated with Melody with certainty.

PAAPI (1943) was produced by Satish Batra under the banner of Batra Productions, Lahore. The film was directed by Majnu. The star cast included Madhuri, Zahoor Raja, Majnu, Salma, Satish Batra, Moti, etc. I do not have much idea about the story line of the film. In a snippet appearing in one of the ‘Filmindia’ issues of 1943, there was an indication that it was a story built around the life of a sinner who had embarked upon his vicious design and poisoning the society. Probably, the film must have ended with the sinner getting reformed.

Today (1 october 2016) is the 110th birth anniversary of S D Burman (1 october 1906- 31 october 1975). He made his debut as a music director in Hindi movies in 1946 (some half a decade prior to the beginning of golden era of HFM) and bowed out in 1975 (some half a decade before the end of the golden era of HFM). So it can be said that S D Burman was one of those music directors who was in the thick of action for much of the golden era of HFM. In fact, he was one of the major contributors to the golden era of HFM.

… a lilting voice […]
falling softer than petals from blown roses on the grass,
and then lingering on and echoing endlessly…
(excerpted from an article by Anup Kumar Pande, published in the Hindu dated December 17, 2004).
A description more decent, more appropriate, I have not been able to find, or even be able to conjure up. The word ‘grace’, characterizes this persona, in ways more than one. And in all ways, nothing more appropriate would appeal – the ‘grace’ of the Almighty, that was gifted to her; the ‘grace’ with which she carried this gift through a lifetime that can only be described as matchlessly supreme; and the ‘grace’ with which she conducted her life, and herself, in an era wherein being blemish-less is a dream accomplishment.

nand ghar anand bhayo
jai kanhaiyya lal ki
Greetings all friends on this auspicious celebration of Nandotsav today. Just a little while back, the prayers and aartis were being held in all temples celebrating the anniversary of the appearance of Krsna, in a jailhouse in Mathura. The main telecast was coming from the Janambhoomi temple in Mathura itself. All temples were crowded with devotees who had come for the darshan of infant Krsna, who appeared to Devaki and Vasudev during their confinement in the prison of Kans, the cruel and vengeful king of Mathura. And worse, Kans was the cousin brother of the very lady, Devaki, whom he had imprisoned. The story of that confinement and of the reasons behind it has been told many times.
