Having watched a few such songs from the earlier days of Hindi movies, I have now come to the conclusion that Amirbai Karnataki could well be the first singer to sing such bhajans as well as the first actress to enact them on screen.

“Jogan” (1950) was a movie produced by Ranjit Movietone and directed by Kidar Sharma. The story was different and was regarded as a risky proposition by the other leading directors of the time, who on listening to the one line plot (disturbing the sanyas of a jogan) refused to have anything to do with the movie. Then Kidar Sharma himself decided to take up the challenge at the encouragement of Chandulal Shah, the producer, who developed the story of the movie from the one line brief. The fact that the plot of the movie was written by Chandulal Shah was not known for half a century since Chandulal Shah had refused to take the credits.
