Today we remember Feroze Nizami on the anniversary of his passing away. His familiar image in the minds of many people it that of a music director and composer. There are fabulous creations that stand testimony to his talents as a master of music. What is lesser known is the fact that Feroze Nizami Sb was a multi faceted and a multi talented personality. He was an exceptional singer himself, in the mold of classical singing. He was also a writer, and an acknowledged expert and teacher of music. His book, ‘Asraar e Mauseeqi’, a definitive work on classical music written in Urdu, remained a standard textbook on the subject in Punjab University (Lahore) for many decades. He was a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines, writing research papers and articles on music. In addition, he was very learned in the field of Sufi literature. Another book by him, ‘Sar-chasma e Hayaat’, is a famous and oft referred work on this subject. He was well learned in the fields of Homoeopathy, Philosophy, and yes, Hindu religion.

This article is the 8900th song post in the blog.

Two years have passed. Well, almost, just about two weeks short. It was another cool night of November that I was busy typing the write up for the 5000th song on this blog. There was much exhilaration and excitement that the 5000th milestone was reached. There were some very cautious and guarded comments, pointing towards the 10,000th song. But at that time, although the 5000th was already capped, the 10,000th still seemed daunting and unthinkable. That was two years ago.

And along with this occasion, we also celebrate the 500th song of Laxmikant Pyaarelal to be posted on this blog (second only to Shankar Jaikishan among music directors, who have already crossed the 700 mark).

VACHAN -1955 was one of those films called ” Social “, but in effect it was a film about the heartbreak of a girl and her misfortunes, how her dreams are shattered and she suffers. Hearing this story, I dared not visit the Theatre where this film was screened.

Hindi film music is like an ocean. As many rivers merge into the ocean at various stages, regional music from various parts of India is assimilated in HFM(Hindi Film Music). Initially it was the Marathi stage/natya sangeet and Parsee theatre which influenced HFM. In the East, it was Rabindra sangeet and Nazrul Geete thate made the basis of film songs. In the Lahore centre it was the Punjabi style after Khazanchi-1941.

June 9, 2012 is the birth centenary of the music director Vasant Desai whom I regard as a man who worked in Hindi film industry on his own terms without being a part of the rate race among his contemporary music directors. Being a devotee of the traditional music, he did not succumb to the lure of money in composing music for mass appeal.

Among the ‘forgotten’ music directors of the golden era, Snehal Bhatkar is remembered for his immortal song kabhi tanhaayion mein yoon hamaari yaad aayegi. In my case, I remember him for an additional reason. Somehow I felt that he had an unique personality. I am not a face reader 🙂 but when I saw Snehal Bhatkar for the first time on TV some time in 90s (on one of the Marathi channels) he appeared to be to be a self contented man. He was in the TV programme to witness the renditions of some of his popular filmy and non-filmy songs by some young and budding singers. Sitting in the front row with his trade mark white Gandhi cap, he was enjoying the rendition of his songs without any nostalgic reactions on his face. Whenever I see his photographs – old as well as new ones, I get the same impression of a contented man.
