Though I can talk a lot on old Hindi movies and music, I am quite out of my depth if I am asked to discuss the current Hindi movies and their music. Most of them are not worth discussing in any case, I am told, but some to them have the ability to catch even my attention.

Greetings to all as we celebrate today the 66th anniversary of independence of this nation. Over the years, we have enjoyed many songs, published on this blog and many not yet showcased here. Songs that celebrate the spirit of patriotism and nationalism, songs that celebrate the event of freedom for this nation on this day. The flavors and the moods of these songs vary a lot. From serious songs of nationalism, from songs that talk of struggles and martyrdom, from songs that exhort their audience to rise and protect, to the songs that celebrate the honor of this land and its people, to the songs that express joy of freedom, and songs that inspire hard work and nation building. So many poets have written such a variety of verses. Every Independene Day and Republic Day we post 6 to 8 songs, and yet there seems to be a treasure of such songs that is out there, still to be discovered.

While selecting songs for this series, I came across this song. The credits of this song said- Lata and Honey Irani. I immediately checked HFGK. There also the same information was there. I knew that Honey Irani had no singing history. I first listened to this song. I found that there are no singing lines to Honey Irani, she just utters 2 or 3 words in the song. However I selected this song because-

1. Since the Video was available, we could watch the curly haired cutie Honey Irani.

2. The Lyrics of this song are like Anokhe Bol and

3. It was a song from 1960, when Lata’s voice still had that magic in it.

In my last post I hoped that Saanp se badhke mera zehar hai would be the last song entry for Zehreela Insaan (1974). Prakashji, with his infinite knowledge of Hindi film songs, though threw water on this hope, when he showed me the existence of this song. Thanks Prakashji! 🙂

Today (5 september) is an important day in India for a non musical reason too. It is the birthday of Dr. Sarwapalli Radhakrishnan (5 september 1888 – 17 april 1975), who was India’s second president and prior to that he had made his mark as an eminent scholar and philosopher. He was knighted by Britain in 1931 and he was accorded “Bharat Ratna”, India’s highest civilian honour in 1954. In honour of Dr Radhakrishnan as a scholar, this day is celebrated in India as teacher’s day.

The Hindi film songs, in the patriotic theme, have an ongoing tradition of children songs also. Just the mention of this will bring to mind such wonderful and inspiring gems in the category of “Mummy Mein To Seekhungaa Goli Chalaana”, (‘Johar in Kashmir’, 1966), “Nannha Munna Raahi Hoon” , (‘Son Of India’, 1962), “Aao Bacho Tumhen Dikhaayen Jhaanki Hindustan Ki” , (‘Jaagriti’, 1954), “Bachcho Tum Taqdeer Ho Kal Ke Hindustan Ki” , (‘Didi’, 1959), “Badhtaa Chal, Tu Badhtaa Chal”, (‘Boot Polish’, 1953), “Aane Waale Kal Ki Tum Taqdeer Ho”, (‘Chhote Babu’, 1957) – and so many other wonderful rousing creations for the kids.

“Ek Hi Raasta”(1956) was produced and directed by B R Chopra. As was his wont, this movie too was on a socially progressive theme of widow remarriage which was quite bold for the time and as a result it was a commercially risky proposition for the movie. But B R Chopra pulled it off and the movie became a commercial success and it was critically acclaimed too.

In Hindi movies, there are very few songs that can be described as children’s songs, which comes as quite a surprise seeing that children always form a good percentage of Indian population. Perhaps the fact that they do not hold the purse strings of the family may well be the reason why children’s songs are few and far between.
