Rakesh Roshan, a struggling actor of his time turned a producer mainly because he was struggling to get roles in movies of other producers. The first movie of his production house called Filmkraft was “Aapke Deewaane”(1979). This movie flopped at the box office and that plunged Rakesh Roshan into serious financial troubles. He took great cares while proucing his next movie. He took a tried and tested story that had tasted box office success in another language and he sought to replicate that success in Hindi. The original movie was “Subhodayam”(1980), a Telugu movie which was remade into Hindi as “Kaamchor”(1982). K Vishwanath, who directed the Telugu original, directed the Hindi remake as well.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 29
———————————————————

As the readers of the Blog may have noticed, these days I have been selecting some rare songs of old Hindi films especially of the 1940s for posting in the Blog. Some of them have not yet found place in YT. In this process, I became aware of the names of some films for the first time. I also had the occasion to go through the star cast of many films released in the 1930s and 1940s.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 24

MEENA (1944) appears to be an obscure movie at least to me as I had never heard nor came across the name of this film until I found a multiple version song from the film a few days back. The film was produced under the banner of Bharat Pictures and was directed by Phani Majumdar. The star cast included Hansa Wadkar, Vasanti, Master Shashi Kapoor (Sr.), Dixit, Gulab, Ratan Piya, Anand etc. There were 7 songs (including a multiple version) in the film, all penned by Pandit Phani which were set to music by Hari Prasanna Das.

In our life, we come across many strange things. There are many occasions when we feel disappointed when we don’t find or get what we had expected. This also teaches us not to get misled by external appearances. There are occasions when we find that our neighbour named Shanti Lal is a loud mouth and very quarrelsome person or visit a hotel called Sheraton, only to find that it is a dirtiest and a third grade joint inside !

In case of a person, at least it is understandable, because no one knows how the child will grow like. I knew one Rikshawala in Hyderabad whose name was Nizam. But when the name of a film is misleading, you not not only get disappointed but feel cheated as well!

Today’s song is from the film Daaka-59. The film was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt and its music was by Chitragupta – one of the very few composers in films to make melodious tunes in almost every film. According to me, Chitragupta, along with Hansraj Behl, Khemchand Prakash and Ravi, formed a quartet of composers, who had tremendous talents and who made melodious music in almost every film that they were associated with !

Today (24 march 2016) is Holi, the Indian festival of colours. This happens to be the eighth Holi festival for this blog.

It goes without saying that being around for so many years and celebrating this (as well as other festivals) together is in itself a cause for celebration.

Given that today is the celebration of Holi. Also given that there is this Hindi film which has a title based on this festival name. Further given that this film has a wonderful song which celebrates this festival, and the song ‘mukhda’ is based on the title of the film, which, as I said before, is based on this festival name. Then another given that this song has been quite popular in its time, and exists in the collective memory of the music lovers. Plus also given that this film is from 1970, which is an era that is verily fresh in the minds of the bandwagon companions, and other contemporary lovers of music. Furthermore. We have been celebrating Holi on this blog for eight years in a row now.
