Today 17th January 2020 is the 80th birthday of Writer, Poet and Lyricist Javed Akhtar who was born on 17th January 1945 at Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). We on this blog are wishing him a ‘very happy birthday today and a healthy and peaceful life ahead!!

On this occasion I will be presenting a few songs penned by Javed Akhtar where the music was composed by the genius R.D. Burman. Though Javed Akhtar and R.D. Burman collaborated in only eight films, they have given us some unforgettable musical gems. ‘Saagar-1985’ and ‘1942-A Love Story-1994’ where they worked together have already been YIPPEED in the blog. Nevertheless we still have songs available from other movies where they collaborated.

Today’s song is from the social film Stage – 1951.

The year 1951 gave us a trailer of what was in store in the decade of 1951 to 1960 and why this period was called ” The Golden Era” of Hindi Film Music. In the first year of the decade , there were many musicals like Awara, Albela, Baazi, Deedar, Bahar, Naujawan, Jaadu, Naheena, Daaman, Dholak, Madhosh, Malhar, Naadaan, Sagai, Sanam, shabistan and many more. This period was a fruitful mixture of old artists and the new era artists. Most actors, M.D.s and Directors who came from the Silent era and the 30’s and the 40’s, ended their career in the 50’s. Some M.D.s, not getting any film as a composer, chose to work as a musician in some emerging M.D’s orchestra, to sustain life. Actors retired and the new blood energized the film industry.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

#Taraanaa-1979#
——————————

“Taraanaa-1979” was a movie from Rajshri Productions. The production house of Rajshri’s are known for ‘clean, musical, family entertainer’ movies. Their movies always bear shots of picturesque locations too.

Taraanaa’ is a movie of the same genre that Rajshree Productions were known for. I had not watched this movie in those years when it was released. However, I was familiar with its songs that had become popular during its time. The most popular song from this movie was ‘Sultana Sultana meraa naam hai Sultana’. It featured in the annual Binaca Geetmala of 1980 in fifteenth position. Another song from this movie ‘ham tum dono saath mein bheeg jaayenge barsaat mein’ was also frequently heard. But the song that I associated with this movie was the song ‘gunche lage hain kahne’ which I presented here in July last year when I watched this movie on a video sharing platform.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film ‘Subhadra’-1946.

The genre of Mythological films was one of the most favourite one of the filmmakers from the day filmmaking started in India. If you remember, even the first ever silent film made by Dadasaheb Phalke- Raja harishchandra-1913 – was based on King Harishchandra’s story from the Vishnu Puran. This was because the Indian culture was such that irrespective of the caste and creed, everyone liked to see these stories which they heard from several generations. In those years, the Hindu population of India was 85 % ( as per 1921 Census). Steadily, these types of films became less and less and by 1990 onwards, as far as I know, there were no Mythological films worth mentioning.

Today’s song is a Fun song from the serious social film Padosi-1941.

The film was the last directorial offering by V.Shantaram, before he left Prabhat Film Company due to internal differences and the pressure put on him to quit the company because he wanted to marry the Company’s heroine Jayashree (Kamulkar). This was the rule in Prabhat film company that no director will ever get involved with any lady artist from the company or marry her. He should quit the company.

#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

# Singer Yesudas’s Birthday #
————————————————————

Today 10th January 2025 is the eighty-fifth birthday of Singer Yesudas (born on 10.01.1940). As of now the statistics page on the blog doesn’t mention the total number of songs Yesudas has sung for Hindi movies. I am sure we will be adding these details soon with one of his songs here. In one of my earlier post I had given the filmography of Yesudas from his debut in Hindi films up to the year 1980. This figure has 84 songs from 52 films. So far, we have not even touched these 84 songs of him on the blog. That means we still have a long way to go before we can cover aa Yesudas songs. Today on his 85th birthday we have already covered two songs sung by him. I am adding one more to his tally today.

# Singer Yesudas’s Birth Anniversary #
————————————————————

Today 10th January 2025 is the eighty-fifth birthday of Singer Yesudas (born on 10.01.1940). We will celebrate his occasion by covering a few songs sung by him. I have already presented one song from the 1980 movie ‘Maan Abhimaan’. In this post, I am presenting a song from the ‘1984’ movie ‘Ek Nayee Pahelee’. This is another song of Yesudas which I was longing to share here. All these years I had never watched this movie ‘Ek Nayee Pahelee’ and I watched it now on the new year day. However, I was aware of this song from this movie as it was played on radio for the promotion of this movie when it was being released in 1984.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 27.02.1984. So, it must be around the summer of ‘1984’ when it was released in theatres around the place I was staying then. Because I have these memories of listening this song on radio of that summer season while sleeping out in the courtyard.
