The Internet has played an important role in our lives. It is due to the internet that we are able to virtually get any information under the Sun, at just one click ! Thanks to all those souls who have created storehouses (archives) of information of the bygone eras in different fields. We can know today about any incident, event, person or place of the past, at will, and get the information, which had seemed not accessible just about 30-40 years ago.

After the introduction of playback singing system in Hindi films around 1935, many accredited singers from All India Radio (AIR), especially from Bombay (Mumbai), Lahore, Calcutta (Kolkata), Delhi, Lucknow/Kanpur etc got opportunities as playback singers in Hindi films. Apart from the popularity they got from the songs they sang for the films, the remuneration they received from playback singing was much higher than the fees they got from AIR.

Today’s song is from an almost unknown film Daku Bhupat-1960.
This was a dubbed film, originally made in Telugu as ” Raja Nandini”-1958. The system of spelling the proper nouns in Southern languages is different from most western or North Indian languages. I believe it all depends on the type of alphabet a language has. Some alphabets which are present in Devanagari script languages (like Marathi or Hindi for example) are not present in southern languages. So sounds like T and TH are both spelled as th. Thus Lalita in Hindi becomes Lalitha in south.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Vakil Saheb-1943.
The second world war started in 1939 and ended in 1945. The effects of wartime started being felt to people in the world, whether involved or not in the war. Shortages of essentials due to transport restrictions and Petrol shortages were acute when the war continued unabated and spread to almost every part of the world. Major powers like England , Japan, Europe, Russia and America dragged countries which were under their rule or influence and those who were friendly to them. This included India too.

Today’s song is from a film made almost 90 years ago….Maaya-1936.
This was a presentation of New Theatres, Calcutta, founded by its owner B.N.Sircar on 10th February 1931. In a span of just 24 years, it had made 150 films in Bangla, Hindi and some other languages. New Theatres actually was like an Academy for training film industry personnel in the Indian subcontinent. B.N.Sircar, though the owner of the company, had a very restricted role in its film making, once it started shooting. After the story was approved and the required finance was provided, he never interfered in the making of the film, rarely even visiting the shooting floors. This freedom helped many talented composers, directors, actors and the technical staff to learn how to face problems and solve them. There was a “Family” feeling among the workers.

Ameen Sayani (21 December 1932- 20 February 2024) recently left for the heavenly abode on 20 february 2024. It goes without saying that Ameen Sayani was easily one of the most important personalities in the field of HFM. Instead of coming up with a hastily prepared article as a tribute to Ameen Sayani, I thought that I should pay him a tribute by discussing Binaca geetmala, a programme that was a musical phenomenon of our times. When we think of Ameen Sayani, we think of Binaca geetmala and vice versa.
