Today’s song is from the film Tulsi Vivah – 1971.

By coincidence, the film was also made by Tulsi Films, Bombay. It was directed by Candrakant (Gaur). The film’s music was by a “once upon a time” famous, but now at the end of his career, Music Director C. Ramchandra. Lyrics were by Pradeep. The cast included Dara Singh, Jayashree Gadkar, Randhawa, Azad, Abhi Bhattacharya, Anita guha, Rajan Haksar and many others. If only the cast names are shown to anyone, he will surely think that the film was a stunt/action film, what with names of pehelwans like Dara Singh, Randhawa and Azad ! I have seen this film. Dara Singh has done the role of Shiv ji in it. Whenever he talked, you would feel that he would lift and throw the person in front of him!!

Today’s song is from the film Bhakta Dhruva-1947.

It was a film by Prakash Pictures, which had become famous for religious films, after their blockbuster film Ram Rajya-1943. The film Bhakta Dhruva-1947 was directed by Shanti Kumar and the music was by the veteran Shankar Rao Vyas, who tuned the lyrics by Pt. Indra and Moti, B.A. ( he was actually M.A.).

Today’s song is from an inspirational film Shri Chaitanya Maha Prabhu-1953.

The film was made by Prakash Pictures, which started as makers of C grade action and stunt films, but ended as makers of top class Religious, Mythological and Social films of merit.

This film was directed by one of the owners – Vijay Bhatt. Music was by R.C.Boral. He was probably invited because the Main character belonged to Bengal. Perhaps it was expected to create a musical semblance to the atmosphere in the film suitable for the story. The cast of the film included Bharat bhushan, Ameeta, Durga Khote, Sulochana Chaterjee, B.M.Vyas, Madan Puri, Umakant, Pinakin Shah, Raaj Kumar and a long list of smaller actors.

Today’s song is from a Religious film- Sant Tukaram-1965.

The period 1961 to 1980 is called the “Golden period” of Indian Cinema, because the way films were made was very close to people’s sentiments, aspirations and lifestyles. Such Closeness never came again. The Indian film industry gave a tough fight to Hollywood in techniques and made meaningful films which the world appreciated. By this time, the Indians migrating to foreign countries increased manifolds and they helped spread the popularity of Indian Cinema.

This was the period when colour film making increased manifolds, but the spread was very slow. In 1960 only 3 colour films were made and in 1961 only 7 films. The number crossed the 10’s mark only in 1965.

This song post marks the 100th song of actor-singer Surendra in the blog as a singer.

Today’s song is from an 86 year old film Service Limited-1939.

The film was made by Sagar Movietone, which was on the peak of its existence from where it was soon to fall down. If one falls down from the first floor, the injuries are not fatal and soon he returns to normal life but falling from the 20th floor, the life becomes unrestorable ! In 1939, Sagar had made 7 films, 5 of which became successful. Unfortunately, this was also the year when the downfall of the company took place. I will not repeat this painful process, which was triggered by the owner Chimanlal Desai’s gambling habit and his bad luck ! It has been discussed here several times. Sagar movietone closed and Chimanlal became a partner in National Studios. Later this too was abandoned by him and a new company- Amar pictures was started.

Today’s song is from a 75 year old Mythological film- Shri Ganesh Mahima aka Shri Krishna Vivah-1950.

The film was made by Basant pictures, Bombay and it was directed by its owner Homi Wadia.

It is ironic that while Homi Wadia separated from his elder brother J.B.H. Wadia and consequently from the company- Wadia Movietone on the issue of insisting on continuing making stunt films, was now making Social and Mythological films and Nadia, who also left with him was working in Stunt and action films of other producers.

The Music Director was S.N.Tripathi. The cast of the film was Meena Kumari, Mahipal, S.N.Tripathi, Moolchand, Dalpat, Amarnath and others.

Today’s song is from an 85 year old film- Paak Daman-1940.

The year 1940 was the end of the first decade of Talkie films. From 1931 to 1939 most of the film music was made and sung by people who were experts in Classical Music. Classical music has never been the area of common people. It was born in Temples and nurtured in the Darbars of Kings and Nawabs. When film music relied heavily on classical mode, it became an imposition on the masses. Luckily, from the last 2 years of the 30’s, film music started changing and the emphasis shifted to traditional and Folk tunes over the classical.

Today’s song is from the film Sangam-1954.

There were 3 films with this title, made in 1941, 1954 and 1964. The 1964 film is known to all as it had all top stars of that time, in lead roles and a Raj Kapoor touch. The 1941 film was a bilingual film , in Marathi and Hindi, made by Navyug Pictures, owned by the famous Marathi writer Acharya Atre and Master Vinayak.
