Today’s song is from the Costume film Raaka-1965.

The film was directed by Kedar Kapoor. Music was by Dattaram- who had been a long time assistant to Shankar-Jaikishen pair and few others for some time. The cast of the film was Dara Singh, Mumtaz, K.N.Singh, Kamal Mehra, Shyam Kumar etc. I was surprised to see the name of K.N.Singh in the film’s cast. One would hardly find the name of this sophisticated villain in such a type of C grade film !

Today’s song is from a C grade stunt film Khooni Khazana-1965. The film was directed by A.Shamshir and the music was by S.Kishen. The cast included Vijaya Chaudhari ( real name Qurasha Begum), Sudhir, Bhagwan, Madan Puri, Shaikh Mukhtar, Bela Bose, Jeevan Kala, Heera Sawant and many other small-time actors. This C grade film was among the last few stunt action films, which were on their way to the end of their era.

I was a great fan and admirer of C grade action/stunt/costume films from my young age. The decorative sets and the unusually long, shining and attractive costumes in the films, the daredevil stunts and the hand or the sword fighting in these films impressed me. Unfortunately, as I grew older, the number of such films was reducing and by the time I almost stopped running after films by the 1970 beginning, C grade action, stunt and Costume films almost disappeared from the theatres. Perhaps their regular audience thinned out or the stuntmen became old or producers of such films turned to other more respectable Genres. Whatever the reason, reality was that the end of such films had occurred !

Today’s song is from the film Samaj ko badal dalo-1947. The film, made by Prakash Pictures, Bombay was directed by one one of its owners Vijay Bhatt. Music was by Khemchand Prakash. The cast of the film included Arun Ahuja, Mridula, Yakub, Umakant, Vikram Kapoor, Leela Pawar and many others.

Contrary to the usual Mythological films made by Prakash Pictures, this social tragedy film was a surprise to their audience. However, due to political instability, India’s proposed Partition and fear of communal riots, Prakash must have tried a safe way out. Additionally, unlike Mythological films, the social films did not need more time to finish the shootings.

Today’s song is from an absolutely unknown film, Laaj-1946.

The film was directed by 3 people – Shehzada Ayyaz, Syed Munawwar and H.Qasim, under the banner of Ayyaz productions, Bombay- probably owned by one of the directors. The music was given by Ramchandra Pal and the cast was Shamim, Radha Rani,Ramesh, H.Prakash, Rajan, Rehana, Master Nissar and others.

I had never heard of this film, let alone seeing it. This was because neither the film nor any of its songs were famous. Even the cast did not boast of any of the famous or popular stars of that time. Only one of the cast members attracted the attention and that was the old time hero Master Nissar.

I tried hard to know more about this film but was not able to get anything. Then I wrote to Shri Harmandir Singh Hamraz ji and he, very kindly, promptly sent me the photograph of the film’s booklet. Thanks to Hamraz ji for this.

The worlds of film songs and the NonFilm Songs are totally different. Of course there was a time when people went for only NFS, but 1) that time film song records were not available like today and 2) that was a long time ago i.e. during the late 1920s to the 1940s. The set of people who liked NFS and collected these records or songs has long gone behind the curtain of the time !

Most lovers of music today are barely aware of a NFS which once made music lovers mad in the last mid century. There is no blame as times change, so do the trends and likings. Today, even classical vocal music is also in the background. Ask any film music lover 5 names of classical singers and most can not tell you. Here also no blame This is how the world takes turns. Public tastes change as per availability, like the way people dressed in olden times and modern times.
