Today’s song is from a film Pahela Pyaar-1947, which has a halo of speculation and is shrouded in mystery.

This film was made under the banner of Sagar Movietone. Sagar Movietone was started as a film making company in 1931 by Chimanlal Desai and Dr. Ambalal Patel. Both of them had their Distribution and Exhibition business in Bangalore. Dr. Patel left Sagar Movietone and returned to his original business of Distribution. (He started his company Sudama Productions and made 3 Hindi films in 1940 and 1941). Desai continued with Sagar till 1940, making 52 Hindi talkie films, 4 Gujarati, 5 Tamil, 3 Telugu and 1 each Punjabi and Bangla films.

The Indian film industry has been absorbing and giving opportunities to all people in India, irrespective of their Caste, Culture, Language, Religion or Province. Maharashtra being ” The birthplace of Indian Film industry” (not my words, but a title of the English book by Isaq Mujavar), initially the film industry had a sizable majority of Marathi and Gujarati people. The Marathis had the talent and the Gujaratis had the money power. After some time, slowly people from all regions, religions and provinces joined the industry. By the time of the First talkie film came, the first film “Alam Ara”-1931 virtually reflected the representations of the variety of people operating in the film industry.

Today’s song is from the film Choron ki Baraat-1960. This is a very rare song from a film, which is making its Debut on the Blog with this song. There was another film having the same title ,in 1980 also. 26 film titles started with the word Chor…, from 1931 to 2012.

Produced by Charanjeet, under the banner of K Pictures, Bombay, the film was directed by Pradeep Nayyar and the Music Director was Manohar (Arora), whose assistants for this film were Sonik-Omi, who themselves became a reasonably successful MD pair with the film ” Dil ne phir yaad kiya”-1966. The cast of the film was Amarnath (Bharadwaj), Nazi, Shaikh, Nemo, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Gulab, Jeevankala, Ram Mohan and many others.

Today’s song is from the film Milan-1958.

Films having titles as Milan were made in 1946, 1958, 1967, and 1994. Then there was Milan ki Aag-1991, Milan ki Pyaas-1989, Milan ki Raat-1967 and Milan Talkies-2019. Even during the Silent era 2 such films were made, one in 1924 and the other in 1929. Milan-1946 had a historical value as it was made in Hindi and Bangla and was based on Tagore’s novel ” Noukadubi”. This was a Debut film for 2 Heroines, namely Meera Mishra and Ranjana- both opposite Dilip Kumar. The more famous film was Milan-1967, starring Sunil Dutt and Nutan and it was a remake of a hit Telugu film ” Mooga Manasulu”-1963. Its song ‘ Saawan ka mahina’ by Mukesh and Lata was very famous. It had a ‘rebirth’ story.

Today’s song is from the film “Hum bhi kuchh kam nahin” -1958.

The film, as per its story belongs to a Costume and imaginary genre, but HFGK mentions it as a ” Social ” film. I wonder why ? The cast of the film consisted of Ameeta, Ranjan, Sumitra, P. Kailash, Kanu Roy, Majnu, Ram Avtar, Manju and others. The 7 songs of this film were written by Anand Bakshi, Rahil Gorakhpuri, Kaif Irfani and Sharki Bhopali. The lyricist Rahil Gorakhpuri wrote 30 songs in 12 films from Sun to le haseena-58 to Aaja Sanam-75. In addition, as Anwar in the pair Javed-Anwar, he wrote songs in 8 films. Javed in this pair was Manohar Lal Khanna – father of Composer Usha Khanna. The Music Director for today’s film was S.D.Batish. The film was directed by Raman Desai.

Today’s song is from the film Laadla-1954.

The same title was used for two more films in 1966 and 1994. As if to give company to this title, two films called ” Laadli” were made in 1949 and 2001 ! Sometimes I wonder why the Hindi filmmakers use the same titles for their films, as if there was a draught of different and novel titles.

Today’s song is the Title song from the film Chameli ki shaadi-1986.

This is one of my favourite films, amongst the hundreds of films that I have seen since the 1940’s decade. As such I love seeing genuine comedy films. Every Hindi film has atleast one or two comedy scenes. In earlier films, there used to be a specialist actor – the Comedian. Nowadays, especially from the Amitabh times, the film’s Hero does the comedy scenes, stunt scenes and emotional scenes himself, thus eliminating the comedy specialists totally. After Asrani, Paintal and others of their ilk, I don’t think any major comedy specialist rose in Hindi films.

Today’s song is a funny Dance song from the film – Naya Aadmi-1956.

There were 4 films with titles Aadmi – in 1939, 1957, 1968 and 1993. Then came films describing an Aadmi, like Aadmi sadak ka-1977, Pehla Aadmi-1950, Naya Aadmi-1956 and Bhala Aadmi-1958. Aadmi alone is not good, so films came like Aadmi aur Apsara-1991, Aadmi aur Aurat-1984 and 1999, Aadmi aur insaan-1969 and even Aadmi ki Aurat-2009 !

Today’s song is from an obscure film Doli-1947.

It is on record that the year 1947 produced a record number of Hindi films -181, till that year. This record was beaten only by number of Hindi films made in 1985 -187 films ! It means that the 1947 record remained unbeaten for 54 years, from the advent of talkie films in 1931. The historians, however agree that though the total number of Hindi films was 181 in 1947, films with good story, acting, direction or good music were not too many.
