Raja Mehdi Ali Khan joined the Hindi film industry sometime around mid 1940s as a dialogue writer. His first film as a lyricist was Filmistan’s ‘Do Bhai’ (1947) in which he teamed up with S D Burman and wrote lyrics for all the songs. His next two films as a lyricist with S D Burman were ‘Vidya’ (1948) and ‘Kamal Ke Phool’ (1949). Surprisingly after 1949, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan had no opportunity to team up with S D Burman again. His association with Madan Mohan started in the film ‘Aankhen’ (1950) which continued till 1967 in 12 Hindi films.

KARWAT (1949) was produced under the banner of Shri Gopal Pictures and directed by Gopal. IMDb has also given the name of B R Chopra as director (uncredited). The star cast included Geeta Nizami, Satish, Paro Devi, Jeevan, Leela Mishra, Sarita Devi, Kamalakant etc. According to information on the website, the film was a costume drama. I had never heard of the film ‘Baawraa’ (1950) until last week. While browsing on the internet, I came across an audio clip of a song from this film. The song was ‘saahil jo dubo de kashti ko saahil ki tamanna kaun karen’. I liked the lyrics and the music composition with Rafi’s voice giving it a finishing touch as per the mood of the song. The song in theghazal format was written by Amarnath Khanna and set to music by Krishan Dayal. The film was produced under the banner of Shri Durga Pictures and directed by G Rakesh.

Continuing with some rare gems penned by Kaif Irfani, I present a song ‘hansa sakey rulaa sakey wo pyaar hamse keejiye’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar from the film SARDAAR (1955). The film was produced and directed by Gyan Mukherjee The star cast of the film included had Ashok Kumar and Bina Rai in the lead roles with Nigar Sultana, Jagdish Sethi, Iftekhar, Tiwari etc in the supporting role.

I am presenting a song which I had heard for the first time on an old gramophone record player in Chor Bazar in early 70s. I liked the song so much that I bought it, despite this 78 RPM gramophone record (No. N.50600) not being in a good condition. I must have heard this song many times during 70s and 80s. Thereafter, I could not play this song as my record player had become unserviceable apart from becoming almost an obsolete item.

Last week, I was surfing the internet to gather information on the Urdu poet and lyricist Kaif Irfani. While I did not get much information on him, I was rewarded with a couple of rare songs written by him. One of the rare songs which I heard for the first time is ‘pyaar ki ye talkhiyaan jo na sah sakoon’ from an obscure film called SARDAAR (1955).

There were a number of Urdu poets during the golden era of Hindi film music that also ran in the contest of attaining the prime slots as lyricists in Hindi films. By early 60s, most of them had either disappeared from the scene or they were marginalised. A few of them had migrated to Pakistan to try their luck there. The names of some of such lyricists who come to my mind are Nakshab, Anjum Philibiti, Zia Sarhadi, Behzad Lucknowi, Aziz Kashmiri, Shewan Rizvi, Noor Lucknowi, Khumar Barabankvi etc. Some of them were also script/screenplay writers at one time or the other.

Mukesh started his filmy career in Hindi film industry as an actor-singer in ‘Nirdosh’ (1941). But it was his song dil jaltaa hai to jalne de in ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) which paved the way for him to become a successful playback singer. Somehow, Mukesh seemed to have been beaten by the acting bug. He acted in films like ‘Aah’ (1953), ‘Maashooqa’ (1953) and in his own production ‘Anuraag’ (1956). He had also produced two films – ‘Malhar’ (1951) which was a success in the box office. However, he did not act in this film. His second film as producer was ‘Anuraag’ (1956) in which he also acted in a lead role and composed music for the film. The film was a flop. With this, his foray into acting as well as music directin in Hindi films came to an end.

The year was 1935 and New Theatres’ ‘Devdas’ (1935) was making waves across Indian sub-continent with K L Saigal’s mesmerising songs. One of Bomaby’s film production companies, Sagar Movietone felt that it should also have an actor-singer of the caliber of K L Saigal to counter the ‘Saigal effect’. A film distributor brought a young and tall handsome lawyer to Bombay and arranged his meeting with Mehboob Khan, the director associated with Sagar Movietone. Mehboob Khan found qualities in this man which he felt could be an answer to K L Saigal. The name of that handsome lawyer was Surendra Nath Sharma better known in Hindi film industry as Surendra or Surendranath.
