The Kidar Sharma-directed Jhaanjar (1953) was a joint venture of music director C Ramchandra and actor Om Prakash under the banner of New Sai Productions. Despite a star cast comprising Motilal, Kamini Kaushal, Om Prakash, Sajjan, Usha Kiran, KN Singh, Sunder, Protima Devi and Sheela Naik, it bombed at the box-office. After Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan left India post-Partition, Suraiya (1929-2004) was the undisputed Singing Superstar of Bollywood for the next several years. It was not until Salma Agha blazed all-too-briefly like a meteor on the Bollywood horizon in Nikaah (1982) that anyone even reminded us of the great diva.

Directed by M.L. Anand, Bewefa (1952) was a Raj Kapoor-Nargis-Ashok Kumar love triangle. Both versions of its iconic song “Dil matwaalaa laakh sambhaalaa” rendered separately by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar are already on this blog. Video clips of its most others numbers too are on YouTube. But the video clip of a superlative Lata number Badnaseebi kaa gilaa ai dil-e-naashaad na kar has gone missing. “Tum na aaye sanam shamma jalti rahi” is one of those rare gems which involves all B-grade names apart from the peerless Lata Mangeshkar herself.
It is her sublime rendering of this number on a lesser light of that period, namely, Vijaya Chowdhary, with B-grade Bollywood hero Ranjan sometimes in the frame.

Produced by P. Aadi Narayana Rao and directed by Vedantam Raghavaiah in 1957, the Hindi version Suvarna Sundari (original in Telugu) is rightfully remembered most for its iconic raagmalika (a multi-raag number) – perhaps a first in a Hindi movie – the famed Lata-Rafi duet Kuhu-kuhu bole koyaliya.
