It was many years ago; as a child I saw the song “Dil Jalta Ha To Jalne De”(‘Pehli Nazar’, 1945) as one of the songs in a Chitrahaar program on Doordarshan. At that time, I had no idea about the actors present on the screen during this song. The image of Motilal that I would later remember and carry with me for a long time, would be the balding, and somewhat comical man from films like ‘Mr. Sampat’ (1952) and ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956). And it was much later that I would become aware that the young man in this song, with a moustache and a head of full hair is none other than the same Motilal. However, on the first viewing of this song on TV, it was the charming face of the lady love, that enamored me, and the image of that open expression on her face, with expectation and waiting written on it, still remains with me as one the most endearing images of a lady actor on screen.

Ah Ganesh, the unsung genius composer, creator of incredible melodies and rhythms that almost never got picturized on the so called grade A stars of his time. His songs, buzzing with hummable and memorable tunes, played themselves out in B and C grade cinema halls, in productions that were considered of the same categories. Some of his songs escaped this banishment to the C grade world, and found a place on the radio waves, and in the mind and memories of listeners. Some such songs have remained in the memories; but then there are many other remarkable creations from him that await re-discovery by aficionados.

Mukesh, a voice that simply does not cease to surprise. It is known that the total number of songs sung by him are numbering around 1,000. The only hope that this number may go up is discovery of maybe some more songs, but that number will not be huge. Most people refer to the Geet Kosh for identifying the songs under various categories. And it is a fact that the Geet Kosh still has some missing details, especially for the films in the 1930s and 1940s. If possible that continuing additional search may yield more details for some films, where the song details are missing. And we may be able to discover more songs sung by the singers in those years.

Mahipal, a name that is so familiar as the actor behind the ‘Raaj Kavi Diwaakar’ in V Shantaram’s ‘Navrang’ (1959), as the healer Zabak in Basant Picture film ‘Zabak’ (1961), or the swashbuckling swordsman Paras in Movieland’s film ‘Parasmani’ (1963), and many more characters played by him in films with historical, mythological and religious themes. But not many people know that Mahipal Chandra Bhandari, a young lad of 23 from Jodhpur, made his debut in films both as an actor and a poet. His first film as an actor, ‘Nazraana’ (1942), a twin production in Hindi and Maarwari, turned out to be a flop, and it would not be for another 8 years, till 1950, that he would catch the attention of the industry and the audience alike, as a performer on the screen. But in the interim, his talent and his childhood interest is writing poetry, kept him busy writing lyrics for films like ‘Maali’ (1944) and ‘Aap Ki Sewa Mein’ (1947).
