There are many flavors of ‘roothhnaa’ and ‘manaanna’ in Hindi films. There are many songs that we like, which are about one person, lady or the gentleman, one of whom is upset and offended about something, and then the other person will make an effort to placate the emotional storm, sing praises, make promises, make amends and try to get the communications back on track. But did I say, lady and gentleman. Well not always – there are songs that put people of many different relationships and genders and ages, into a song trying to set right the upset moods. I recall the wonderful kids song “Daadi Amma Daadi Amma Maan Jaao. . .” from ‘Gharaana’ (1961), in which two kids are trying to humor and bring laughter to the lips of their grandma, who is offended with the actions and deeds of the generation in between. And I am sure readers will add many more songs of such situations to this list.

When Atul wrote to me in his usual polite way the other day that I must write a post on this song I was taken aback. I have been a (mostly silent) reader of his blog and I have even written a few pieces for it but none for a very long time. Perhaps he thought I might like to do this piece on Don’s “Khaike paan banaraswala” as most of my early pieces were on Amitabh Bachchan’s movies of that era as I am an unabashed AB fan. What he did not know when he wrote to me is that I had another “qualification” for doing this piece; I studied for five years in Banaras.

It is another of my absolute favorite songs and movies. I actually have a superstition that if I see a Hrishikesh Mukherjee Movie on the morning of an exam or an important day, the day will go well. Golmaal(1979) is a movie that came regularly in the morning 6 am slot in SAB Tv and SET MAX while I was in school and thus went on to be a much by-hearted film. In fact I remember when my cousins were 2 yrs old and I called my aunt one day, she told me that they were watching this movie. I replied that I am extremely proud of her, she is giving them the right education and they will grow up to be like me. She laughingly said that then I will shut the movie right away.

Recently I wrote up a 1970s song here and today I’m presenting another 1970s song.

I know that by the standards of this blog, the 1970s is a fairly recent decade. Most of the songs here are from an earlier period – and I love this because it gives me an opportunity to listen to, and learn about, so many forgotten gems of an earlier era. I will never forget the thrill I got when I heard “halla gulla lai la (Dholak – 1951)” for the first time – it has since become one of my FAVOURITE songs! Actually I’d always been interested in old songs but thanks to the internet and this blog, my interest has not only been encouraged, it has also been sharpened in the last few years.

One of the advantages of living through a period (as opposed to reading or hearing about it second-hand) is that you have your own experiences of it that nothing else can quite substitute for. Of course, events may be recorded very accurately for posterity so that future generations get an idea of the past. But it is still not the same thing.

The regulars of the blog know it by now that I miss no opportunity to gloat about my pets. And such opportunities present themselves in the form of songs featuring dogs and cats. My pets seem to have become popular, guazing by the fact that regulars tell me about various dog songs that they come across.
