A movie like “Mughal e Azam” (1960) can boggle one’s mind even today, more than half a century after this movie was released. And I am not just taliking about the movie. I am talking about several aspects of the movie. It was a magnum opus in every respect.

“Baap Beti” (1954) is an obscure movie. Not much information is available about this movie on internet, and the sketchy information available on it could well be misleading and wrong, seeing that Asha Parekh’s name gets mentioned as an actor in this movie, and that too in the entry of imdb ! That site also mentions that it is a Bimal Roy movie based on a Guy de Maupassant novel and that it had Nalini Jaiwant and Tabassum too in it. Now this information appears more likely. Tabassum , then a young kid could have played Beti. But who played the Baap ? I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

“Teesra Kaun” (1965) is a movie that had Feroz Khan and Kalpana in it. This movie was apparently a B grade spy thriller.
This was one of the earlier movies of the an up and coming music director called R D Burman.

Creator of many iconic songs in the 50s and 60s, Hansraj Bahl’s music has a semi classical touch, with roots in his earlier training in classical music. The decades of 50s and 60s are known as the golden age of Hindi film music, and that for a good reason. The quality of music and songs was absolutely superb, no matter what the content of the films used to be. One just has to untwine one thread on this time line, and immediately there is a gem of a song to be heard. Maybe it is an obscure film, maybe the song itself is unheard, or not heard for ages. Maybe the sound of the song is such that the first reaction is, whose voice is this, whose composition is this. But just let the song play and simply listen to it, and before long you will start loving it, and now the reaction would be, where has been this gem hiding all these years. Atul ji has written over and over again about this phenomena, about finding unheard gems from obscure movies, with every plunge one takes into this ocean of music.
