Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part X: Year 1956

No we have reached part ten of this ambitious series. Lata Mangeshkar sang her first Hindi film songs in 1946. She sang just four songs that year and 5 songs the next year. By the time she completed one decade of her career, she had already sung more than one thousand songs in HFM, becoming the first playback singer to achieve this feat.
1956 was the eleventh year of Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer in Hindi movies. In other words she entered the second decade of her HFM career this year. If she had sung 4 songs in 3 movies in 1946, 1956 saw her singing a whopping 204 songs in 49 movies.

‘Jeena Yahaan’ (1979) haa an impressive list of actors of the new wave films but I do not recall having read or heard about this film. So, I recently watched this film on a video sharing platform. The story of the film was interesting and was in keeping with Basu Chatterjee’s favourite subject – the lives of middle-class people in urban setting.

Today, November 26, 2020 is the 31st Remembrance Day of Chand Usmani (03/01/1933 – 26/11/1989). She excelled in the roles of a suffering woman – as a wife, a sister and later as a mother. Though she was a fan of Hindi films in her teens, she did not think about an acting career in Hindi films. Her first preference was to complete her higher education in keeping with her family tradition. But her fate was written to be an actress.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part IX: Year 1955

In this episode, we arrive at the tenth year of Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer in Hindi movies. She completed a decade of playback singing in HFM this year. She had already notched some firsts in HFM playback singing that did not get noticed at that time. For instance, she had become the first playback singer ever to sing more than one thousand songs in Hindi movies by 1954. She kept setting benchmarks that others could only dream of. We will discuss them at appropriate occasions.
