STREET SINGER (1938) is regarded as one of the three tops films of K L Saigal produced under the banner of New Theaters. If ‘Devdas’ (1935) confirmed the arrival of K L Saigal as an actor-singer, ‘Street Singer’ (1938) and ‘Zindagi’ (1940) made him the first star actor-singer of the Hindi film industry. People used to watch his films more for his songs than for the film itself.
