“Jogan” (1950) is full of songs. In fact there are so many songs in it that there may not be much room for normal dialogues in this movies, I think. I have read somewhere that as many as 12 songs in this movie were sung by Geeta Dutt alone !

In the 1920s and 30s, and also later, Pankaj Babu’s affinity for Rabindra Sangeet has had a significant influence in making this music form popular with the general public. He had made a choice of music as his calling in life, at a very early age, and although he joined college, but he did not go ahead with higher education. He first became a student of the noted musician Durgadas Bannerjee, and then later studied music under Dinendranath Tagore. Dinendranath or Dinu Thakur, as he was popularly called, is the grandson of Rabindranath Tagore’s eldest brother, Dipendranath Tagore. This association brought Pankaj Babu into the culturally rich environment of the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home of the Tagore family. It had an everlasting influence on him, and the influence of this culture is visible in all his works.

The non-film offerings of Saigal Saab are verily a much more valuable treasure than the film music rendered by him. Although comparatively much smaller, this treasure is much more inspiring and stimulating. Completely un-encumbered by the requirements of music direction, and playing to an audience, these non film offerings are a rare collection of exceptional quality and an expression of a free soul. This collection consists of 26 Urdu ghazals, and 11 bhajans and geets in Hindi. (Please note that these numbers do not include his songs in other languages i.e. Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi, and Persian). Majority of these are now posted on this blog. We are nearing the end of this list, and the postings of this series should conclude in another ten days or so.

Saigal Saab, a person, a name – who went beyond being a legend in his own lifetime. He was an institution, with no parallel in the entire heritage of Hindi film music, during the years that he actually graced the stage of the world, or in all the years since. Having entered the cine world almost with the inception of talkies, as the stream of film music was still trying to find its feet, groping in the dark, he took this music to unprecedented heights, and left behind a benchmark that has not been equaled since he departed.

Praying to the Almighty to take care of one’s problems is an old practice in Hindi movies dating back to 1940s. Which was the first movie where a lady was shown singing a prayer in front of a God’s idol in Hindi movies ? Perhaps the knowledgeable readers may have some idea.
