In India, where boys and girls are not allowed to mingle freely like in the west, most wedding alliances are fixed by the parents, again without taking the kids themselves into confidence. And after the parents finalise it, they inform the parties. One important information, and perhaps the only important information that a person often has is a photograph- a passport size photograph.

By late 1980s, R D Burman was struggling to get assignments, because Bappi Lahiri and Anu Malik kind of music had invaded the Bollywood music scene. And R D Burman died a rather unsung death in 1991, as limelight had deserted him by that time.

There was one thing common between O P Nayyar and S D Burman in 1950s. Both did not work with Lata and used the voice of Asha Bhonsle instead. And that helped Asha Bhonsle’s career no end.

“Johny Mera Naam” (1970) was perhaps the last time a Dev Anand movie turned out to be very successful at box office, though “Des Pardes” (1978) was also successful.

I was aware of a movie called “Bhai bhai” released in 1940s, but I never knew that a movie of the same name was made in 1970 too. This 1970 movie must have done really poorly at the box office to be so unknown.

“Aap mujhe acche lagne lage” is a very nice song sung by Lata. But as happens with me for many songs, I was not aware which movie this song was from. When I googled, I was flooded with details of a 2002 movie titled “aap mujhe ache lagne lage”. What blasphemy ! This new movie has not only used the title of this Lata classic, this movie has even hijacked this phrase, and finding out the details of the Lata song has become a tall order.

I found it interesting that the same Shankar Jaikishan, who were the regular music directors of Raj Kapoor were the regular music directors of Shammi Kapoor as well. But while SJ would use Mukesh ( and sometimes Manna Dey) for Raj Kapoor and create hit songs, they would create hit songs with Rafi for Shammi Kapoor.

Tum aa gaye ho noor aa gaya hai

When the makers of this movie made this movie, no one was left in any doubt that the movie was based on Mrs Indira Gandhi’s life, with Suchitra Sen playing her role. And very imaginatively, they called his movie “Andhi”, removing the first letter “G” from “Gandhi”. The movie was released during emergency, and to this day, I am amazed at the risk that the makers of this movie took. Another movie, “Kissa Kursi ka” which mocked Indira Gandhi and her son, did not meet with the same kind fate with the censors at that time.
