Kedar Sharma, a career that started with a paint brush, and then went on to scale exceptional heights of creative cinema, and in the process helped to start many a famous careers in the industry. The eminent showman, Raj Kapoor, revered him as his guru. Many a famous artists made their debut in his films – Madhubala, Geeta Bali, Mala Sinha, Bharat Bhushan, Tanuja etc. He was the inspiration and the encouragement for a whole generation of performers and directors in the early decades of the industry.

Traditionally, ghazals are supposed to be rendered in a soft voice and in a slow tempo to make the listeners understand the deep meaning behind each words. Ghazals rendered in an appropriate mood can awaken emotional feelings even in a stone-hearted person. Perhaps it was in these context that ghazals were sung in thumri style in the early 20th century, creating a melancholic mood and offering the opportunity for singers to emphasise on some specific words in the ghazals which were important in understanding the meaning in the ghazals. Singers like Begum Akhtar, Kamala Jharia, Master Madan, K C Dey, K L Saigal etc sang ghazals mostly in thumri style.

There is very little that I know about the 1953 film titled ‘Hamdard’. Well, besides the basic information of course. The Geet Kosh listings tell us that this film was produced by Asha Biswas, under the banner of Variety Pictures. The film is directed by S Bhagat, and the star cast includes Shekhar, Nimmi, Smriti Biswas, Yashodharat Katju, Ishu Jagirdar, Harish Bhardwaj, Rajan Kapoor, PD Lal, KS Sengar, and Shivraj etc. The film has a total of nine songs, eight of which come from the pen of Prem Dhawan and one is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The music is composed by Anil Biswas.

Way, way back when we were jumping with joy, on 13th November, 2011 – this blog had reached the magic number of 5000 songs. I am sure many had it in their minds to think about the 10,000th song. An old adage – they say that the real geniuses leave early. Many an instance are scattered all over the history timeline. Gosh, she was still 4 months short of her 40th birthday when she gave up her resistance to the personal tragedies and tribulations, making her way out of the miserable labyrinths of control and manipulations that she was subjected to most of her life. Ah but, what a color her own life, rubbed on to her on screen persona, as she moved from one perfection to the next in the tragic milieu of tangled relationships and human miseries. A performer too young, too vivacious, to be baptized as the Tragedy Queen. And the vicious circle moved from real life to screen and back, so many times over, that her cup of life proved to be diminutive, unable to hold all the sorrows that the world put in it.

In 1968, when HMV brought out an LP of CH Atma’s non film songs, the disc was titled as ‘Lingering Melodies’. Such an appropriate epithet and such a fitting description of the quality of this voice – ‘lingering’. The baritone sounds rendered by this wonderful singer, assuredly have this lingering quality. The sound and the words stay with the listener, as if still around, as if still playing somewhere, even after the song is complete. That is the kind of effect this voice has on the listener.

Ganesh Sharma, the prodigious composer and the creator of melodies of everlasting memories. Pick up any film done by him, any song created by him, and as you listen, and if you are not aware of the identity of the music director, you will surely wonder who would it be, the creator of such a lovely melody. Somehow, the combination of the tones, the octaves and the emphases make the tunes created by this hugely talented musician simply touch a very endearing nerve, and the heart simply wants to sing along with the flow of the song.
