There are some prominent Hindi film actors whose names are mainly associated with ‘middle of the road’ and ‘off-beat’ cinemas though they have also worked in mainstream Hindi films. The names that comes to my mind are Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Dipti Naval etc. Almost all of them made their Hindi film debut under the direction of Shyam Benegal. I was not aware that Rajeshwari Sachdev was also one of such actors until recently while checking her filmography. She has worked on stage, television and films. She is also a singer and a dancer.

Today (26 January 2024) is Republic Day of India.

India became a republic on 26 January 1950. That was easily a red letter day in the history of Modern India. It was on this day that India decided to be a country that would be a democracy where each citizen, irrespective of his caste, creed, religion, gender, economic status etc would enjoy equality without discrimination. The country would be governed according to the acts of Indian constitution that was adopted on this date.

Today’s song is from the comedy film titled ‘Chalis baba Ek Chor’ (1954).

Obviously, the famous and popular story from the Arabian Nights – Alibaba aur Chalis Chor, has been used here for a parody of the film title. The film was produced by K Arts, a banner owned by the producer Kamini Kaushal (real name Uma Kashyap). Being the producer, she had the right to be the heroine of the film too ! The hero of the film was a misfit – Balraj Sahni. Undoubtedly, he was an excellent actor, but his personality, looks and his role history made him unfit for the comedy or romantic films. Some actors create an image with their early films and it sticks with them. After sometime, the audience finds it difficult to accept them in the roles diagonally opposite to their established image.

In my last article, I had discussed Basu Chatterjee’s film, ‘Gudgudee’ (1997) which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Seven Year Itch’ (1955). In this article, I have taken up for discussion yet another film of Basu Chatterjee which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Fortune Cookie’ (1966). The film is ‘Laakhon Ki Baat’ (1984). The film was produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee. The star cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Farooq Shaikh, Anita Raj, Anjali Sen, Utpal Dutt, Pinchoo Kapoor, Dinesh Hingoo, Subbiraj, Javed Khan, Bhagwan Sinha etc. Neither the name of the storywriter nor the acknowledgement of the inspiration for the film was mentioned in the credit titles of film.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Circus Queen’ (1959).

Readers who are above or around 50 to 60 years of age will surely remember how exciting was a visit to a circus show, in their childhood. We would see animals, generally found in the zoo, doing unbelievable tasks in the circus and then there were those inevitable jokers, who would try hard to make the public laugh. Especially the younger audience would love them. Gone are those days. Nowadays circus shows have become rare and there are no animals in them, I suppose.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Shikar’ (1955).

Films with the title ‘Shikar’ were made in 1955, 1965, 1999 and 2001. Then there were films called ‘Shikari’, made in 1932, 1946, 1963 and 1991. To top it all, there was a film with the title ‘Shikar Shikari Ka’ made in 2010. I am not giving these details for fun, but after you read this film’s story, you will yourself say that the title of this film should have been ‘Shikar Shikari Ki’ !
