Today’s song is from the film Badi Maa-1945.
There were 5 films called Maa and its varieties like Badi Maa, Chhoti Maa. Then there were Maa films with Baap, Beta, Beti, Behen,Biwi, Mamata, Aanchal, Pyaar, Aansoo, Saugandh, Shakti, and Qasam. Additionally, Durga and Santoshi Maa were also made. Almost 30 films about Maa at one place in the index book. I did not try other letters of the alphabet to see more possible films with the word maa – like Naani Maa, Dadi Maa, Meri Maa, Teri Maa, Apni Maa, Uski Maa etc !

Today’s song is from the film Panna Dai-1945.
The film was based on a story of Loyalty and glorious sacrifice, having a special place in Indian History. I wonder how the Producer selected the story of Indian sacrifice, when the trend was to make films on the falsely glorified bravery and good qualities of Mughal Kings ! It is a sad reflection that the choice mostly went in favour of the laurels of Mughals and the invaders of India rather than the builders and protectors of India. The ratio of Historical films was perhaps 70:30, in favour of the Mughals and other outsiders, compared to India’s own Heroes. Regional films from Maharashtra, Andhra, Tamilnadu, Karnatak, Orissa and Bengal were much better than the Hindi films on this count.

Today’s song is from the film Panna Dai-1945.
One year earlier i.e. in 1944 another film Panna-1944 was released, but that one was made as a British War Propaganda movie. In that movie, the lead actress Geeta Nizami was awarded Rs. 6000 for her role, by the British Government ! Of course, the film Panna Dai-1945 was clearly a film on the historically famous Panna Dai of Rajputana for her singular supreme sacrifice for saving her King’s heir from the enemies.

Today’s song is from an old film of the first decade of the Talkie films-Mera Haq aka In search of happiness-39.
When New Theatres in Calcutta started making Talkie films, very soon their Bi-lingual films became very popular. There were quite a few reasons like, good actors, good songs and good distribution network pan India. However, I think, the most important reason of their success was that their films were primarily based on well known novels, dramas and stories. B N Sircar had understood that if the story is strong, the efforts of the Director and Composers will surely make the film a successful one.
