Missing Films of 1960s – 10

Mall Road, for me, is connected with wonderful sweet memories of my childhood.  As it is, Mall Road is there in many cities, here in India and also outside India.  But in India, and more so in my mind, the mention of this word is almost always connected with Simla.

Genius of Jaidev – 34
———————————

One more song from the film  ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do’ is a surprise song for me. I heard it for the first time due to the ‘meherbaani’ of ‘uperwala’. (Geographically Delhi is ‘uper’ to Mumbai.)  The second surprise is the sweet voiced singer.  Suman Kalyanpur has sung only two songs with Jaidev. (as far as I know)  The other one is “Mai Teri Dasi Tu Mera Data” from the 1972 film ‘Bhavana’.  After hearing this song every music lover would opine in unison, that they should have come together more often. One more rare occurrence is lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri providing lyrics for Jaidev.  I request our statisticians of the blog to make me ‘buddha’ (dictionary meaning – ‘one who knows’) about these statistics.

Two important birthdays coming together today – 8th September. One is music director S Mohinder and the second is Asha Bhonsle. These two have created a number of songs together. Some memorable, and others, like this one, need to be rediscovered for their sheer beauty and simplicity of pleasure. During our visit to Bombay last month, Bakshi ji and I had the good fortune to spend a whole afternoon with S Mohinder ji.  A session that lasted almost four hours – it was a wonderful trip down the memory lane, for him, as well as for us.  That meeting itself is a detailed writeup that is waiting in the drafts list.  For this occasion, I am quoting two episodes where S Mohinder ji remembered Asha ji very fondly.

Genius of Jaidev – 25
———————————-

In this series, we are trying to cover all the songs from 1957 film ‘Anjali’, which happens to be Jaidev’s third released film. Prior to this, he had only one released film in each of the prior two years; 1955 – ‘Joru Ka Bhai’, and 1956 – ‘Samundari Daku’. Not at all a successful entry in film music world. He had to wait till 1961 and the film ‘Hum Dono’ to be recognized as a great composer, capable to catch attention of classes and masses. However, to the true good music lovers (including me), all of his tunes right from his first film are gems.

Readers of this blog can rarely guess my whereabouts from the posts that appear in the blog, unless I share such information. Otherwise posts appear on the blog daily irrespective of my whereabouts or my preoccupation with other activities.

I make use of technology to ensure that posts appear on the blog like clockwork. The technology involved is commonplace today but it was not available just a few years ago. I take it for granted but one still must have the right equipments to use them. If I forget to take even one of the tools of the trade with me then that will set me back by several years to the era where it will no longer be possible for me to blog the way I have been blogging for the last seven years and more.

Recently, I read ‘In the Company of a Poet – Gulzar in Conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir’ (2012). The book gives a bird’s eye view on the life of Gulzar – from setting his foot in Bombay (Mumbai) in mid-1950 to his continuing association with Bollywood. Before reading this book, I was under the impression that, like many others who came to Bombay to fulfill their aspirations to work in Bollywood, Gulzar was one of them. It was not so as revealed from his conversations in the book. Gulzar came to Bombay not by his own choice but as a part of his father’s plan to divide the financial responsibility of his large family following his post-partition migration from Dina (in Pakistan) to Delhi.

“Life is short but art and for that matter music is permanent. There is no death of a true art and so is it with music.”

These are the words of one who is known as the ‘Gentleman Musician’ amongst the community of music directors and musicians, both in Bombay and in Calcutta.  Vistas Ardeshir Balsara – a name that is part of a long list of very talented musicians, whose contributions to the making of the film music has been immense.  These musicians, instrumentalists and arrangers, most of whom were  experienced and capable of being music directors in their own right, rarely got to appear in the limelight and be recognized for their work.  V Balsara is one such gifted musicians who did get the opportunity to step out from behind the curtain, and be known for his art.  I am sure all will remember the iconic song “Ae Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal” (‘Daag’, 1952) in all its flavors.  The piano accordion in this song is played by him.

Remembering V Balsara on the anniversary of his passing away (24th March).
