Desert song no. 7, is a Mubarak Begum solo from ‘Baghdad ka jaadu’ (1956). This is the first song from this film to be posted in the blog. Actually I saw at least three songs from this film, including the theme/caravan song by Mohammed Rafi and a delightful duet by Mubarak Begum and Khurshid Bawra. I was able to recognize a single person featuring in those song. Than I got a brainstorm and googled the film. And yes I found all there is to know about it here.

A post that has been waiting to be keyed in for many days now. And I have two reminders from AK ji already. Two weeks ago, the music lovers community in Delhi had a rare treat. A few local enthusiasts had come together and sponsored a visit by Mubarak Begum, the famous singer of the 50s and 60s, and a live program was arranged on the evening of 6th October, a Saturday. I had informed AK ji about the program, and he was also able to attend. The program was arranged at the India Islamic Center on Lodhi Road, and the primary sponsor of this program was an NGO by the name Panch Tattwa. Another sponsor is a person who is a good friend of mine.

Sajjad Hussain composed only about 100 songs in his entire career lasting more than three decades. When I went through the list of his songs, I discovered some interesting facts. Though he composed very few songs, he worked with a disproportionally large number of singers and artists in these songs. In all, he worked with over 25 singers and over 25 lyricists in these songs that add up to just about 100 !

This is another lovely ghazal rendered by Mubarak Begum. As I continue to search for her songs that I have heard before, I also keep running into songs that I have never heard before, and they are simply wonderful. This one I had heard before, decades ago, and have been searching for it for some time. Nowadays it seems that anything that is available as an audio or video recording, it will surface eventually on YouTube, so I keep trawling through this immense storehouse. Eventually I am able to locate this ghazal on YouTube. Only the audio is available, yet a relief that it is there.
