Today is a very special day for all HFM lovers. It is the birth anniversary of one of the most beloved of artistes, and one of the greatest and most respected. I am, of course, talking about the one and only Rafi Saab.
Had he been alive today, he would have completed 93 years. But as fate would have it, he left us in 1980 itself, when he was barely 55. One does not have control over these matters – one can only have fond memories of the person concerned, and enjoy the rich legacy that he or she has left behind.
And WHAT A LEGACY Rafisaab has left behind!

hullo Atuldom
Day before yesterday I sat through a movie called “Suhana Safar” looking for a suitable song to wish Sharmila Tagore on her birthday which is this week, made a few mental notes etc. Then I went for a short walk, returned and switched back on to the net to check cricket score etc and the first thing that I saw – an announcement on yahoo’s home page “Shashi Kapoor passes away after prolonged illness at a Mumbai hospital at the age of 79”. My first reaction- “oh no!” Then I thought let me see if atulites have got the news and I saw that our Rajaji had just broken the news there.

“Maaya Jaal”(1962) aka “Jaadoogar” was a partially colour film (which was usual for movies of that era). This movie was directed by Babubhai Mistry for Rajhans Pictures, Bombay. This the comment by our own Ava Suri ji, that I find on the YouTube upload page of this song. Yes, ‘rollicking’ is just the right word to describe the tenor of this song. By the way, the YouTube channel on which this is posted is titled ‘The Edwina Channel’. And for those who are familiar, this channel is managed by Dan Thomas (aka Thomas Daniel). Dan has been actively collaborating with dear Greta Memsaab, for cleaning and sprucing up digital videos of old Hindi films, subtitling them and putting them up on the YT. Our dear Raja ji is also part of this effort.
