When it comes to music of a movie, it is the music director that gets much of the credit for the song ( alongwith the singer and the lyricist, of course). It is often the assistant music director/ arranger who is often does the real work and still he remains unsung.

Late 1960s was a time of glut for quality songs, so much so that these songs jostled for space and many great songs failed to catch the ears of the audience. Though I very much lived through those yeras, even I missed out listening to quite a few such songs, as I am discovering these days almost on a daily basis.

If Shammi Kapoor could act in “An Evening in Paris” then Vishwajeet could act in “Night in London”. If Shammi Kapoor’s movie could have lilting music by Shankar Jaikishan, then Vishwajeet movie would have the music of Laxmikant Pyarelal to match.

In late 1950s and early 1960s, there were quite a few movies with “Bambai” in their title. Thus we had titles like “Bambai ka chor” and “Mr X in Bombay” those days.

“Amaanat” was a movie starring Manoj Kumar and Sadhana. I find that the date of release of this movie is shown as 1977. Considering that Sadhana had retired from movies in late 1960s, I think that “Amaanat” was a movie picturised in 1960s and accordingly I thought that it was a movie of 1967 rather than 1977.That is the only explanation for the kind of dresses worn by Sadhana and Manoj Kumar in this movie which are incongruous with the dressing styles of 1970s. This movie has an iconic song that goes “matlab nikal gaya hai to pahchaante .”. I am fully convinced that I have been listening to this song from 1960s itself.

By now I have posted more than a thousand songs from the golden era of Bollywood music. It can be easily noticed that lyrics played a very important roles in the success of these songs. In 1980s and later, lyrics lost its importance in the minds of the music directors and from that time onwards, songs lost their soul and their longevity. However great the singing and music may be, unless the singer and music director has a good song to work with, the song cannot hope to become popular.

“Guide” (1965) was voted by Bollywood insiders ( music directors, lyricists, singers) as the movie with the best music among all Bollywood movies in history. It is no mean achievement, and it shows just how highly the music of this movie is regarded by the Bollywood music industry themselves.
