People may be aware of a movie called “Zameen Aasmaan”(1984) and even “Zameen Aasmaan” (1972), but there was another movie of this name as far back as 1946. This movie “Zameen Aasmaan” (1946) has been forgotten and its music is just as obscure. Just now I accidently came across a song from this movie. and what a wonderful discovery it is ! This song, which I would have dismissed as “boring” in my younger days in 1970s is something that I would now go miles to listen to. What a divine composition it is !

I am aware of the movie called “Sangam” (1964), but I was not aware that another movie of the same name was produced exactly 10 years prior to “Sangam” (1964). This movie, i.e. “Sangam” (1954) had Kamini Kaushal, Shekhar, Shashikala, K. N. Singh, Murad, Rajrani, Chaman Puri, Ratan, Jeewan etc in it.

“Gauhar” (1953) is an obscure movie with equally obscure songs. This movie was an All India Pictures production movie. It was directed by F H Hassan. The movie had Agha, Bina Ray, Cuckoo, Vijayalaxmi, Chanchal, Chaman Puri, Charlie etc in it.

Do dil toote do dil haare

I became aware of the movie “Heer Ranjha” (1970) in 1974, while going through movie magazines, which incidentally were supposed to be out of bounds for school kids barely in their teens. 🙂 But I was a kid who loved reading all kinds of publications, including screenplays of movies too. Yes, those days screenplays of movies used to get published too. I read screenplays of “Bobby” (1973) and “Aasheerwaad” (1968). I never watched these movies and I never thought that I missed anything by not watching them, that is how vivid the screenplays used to be.

“Madhosh” (1951) has one hero (Manhar Desai) and two heroines (Meena Kumari and Usha Kiran). In this movie, Manhar Desai got to lip sync in the voice of Talat Mehmood. The two leading ladies, who was seen to romance the same hero, were also made to lip sync in the same voice, viz that of Lata.

“Chaar Din” (1949) is a movie starring Shyam and Suraiyya. This movie had some nice songs in it that became good candidates for being played in the “puraani filmon ke geet” on radio ceylon when I was growing up.
