Mukesh and his Composers – 11a
———————————-
The last post on this series dealt with the non-film songs sung by Mukesh for Ravindra Jain. That was nearly five months back. Some personal and professional matters crept in resulting in the inordinate delay. Though there was enough time for a few posts, the procrastinator in me kept on scoring small victories resulting in the holdup.

Lata Mangeshkar who first sang in a Marathi film ‘Gajabhau’ (1944), is still continuing to sing for Hindi films albeit very sparingly. As per http://www.myswar.com, she sang a solo song for the film ‘Dunno No Y2 Life is a Moment’ (2015). That gives her playback career a span of over 7 decades – a world record, I guess, in playback singing for films. In fact, she sang for 46 films between 2000-2015. I thought why not do a similar exercise for Talat Mehmood.

सच्ची, बहुत दिन हो गए बंबई गए। चलिए, फिर एक बार चलते हैं, मायानगरी में, एक बहुत ही अनूठे और अनसुने गीत के साथ।
Really, many days now since the last visit to Bombay. So I take you there once again today, along with a very rare, almost unheard and a very out of the ordinary song.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 8

‘ओ’
“ओ ओ ओ गोरी लाखों जनम से”
Yet one more truly vintage Rafi, if ever there was one. The songs by him simply do not cease to wonder the mind, such is the quality of expression and the depth of a seasoned rendition. The measured deliberateness of singing underscores the mastery of the singer on perfectly realizing the nuances of the emotions involved. Yes, truly vintage Rafi.

Genius of Jaidev – 42
—————————–
This is the rarest of the rare song of Rafi, from an unreleased film of the seventies ‘Ek Bulbula Paani Ka’, for which I do not have any details. Even HFGK is silent about it. This is the only song from the film which is available.

‘आ’
“आप से दिल ही मांगा था जान तो नहीं”
Searching through the obscure and the unheard, we continue to encounter such fabulous creations that bring a gasp of pleasant surprise. Today, in the second installment of this new series of songs by Rafi Sb, I bring this exuberant song of ‘chhed chhaad’ from an unreleased film from the 1960s. The film is ‘Jaan Bachi Laakhon Paaye’. We have one song from this film already posted a little over one year ago – “Teri Zulf Mein Chun Ke Champa Ki Kaliyan”, another delightful creation, in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and Sharda.

Dev Saab – the phenomena continues. With coming newer generation, it may fade away. But there is still many more generations to go before that can happen.
Remembering Dev Saab on the anniversary of his birth today – 26th September. He would have been 92 years young today. And I am sure, he is, wherever he maybe now.

Recently, I read ‘In the Company of a Poet – Gulzar in Conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir’ (2012). The book gives a bird’s eye view on the life of Gulzar – from setting his foot in Bombay (Mumbai) in mid-1950 to his continuing association with Bollywood. Before reading this book, I was under the impression that, like many others who came to Bombay to fulfill their aspirations to work in Bollywood, Gulzar was one of them. It was not so as revealed from his conversations in the book. Gulzar came to Bombay not by his own choice but as a part of his father’s plan to divide the financial responsibility of his large family following his post-partition migration from Dina (in Pakistan) to Delhi.

Troika of the Blog’s latest century singers – Mukesh, Rafi and Kishore Kumar : 3. Kishore Kumar
—————————————————————————————————
After reading a vast repository of information available on the internet as well as in the books, I am pretty certain about the personalities of Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhonsle etc. But I am not so sure about what sort of person Kishore Kumar was. He was branded as eccentric, unpredictable, money minded, stingy etc etc. In a rare interview conducted by Lata Mangeshkar about a couple of years before his death in 1987, he had revealed that he donned the mask of eccentricity and unpredictable behaviour just for those persons whom he disliked and did not wish to be associated with. But how can one explain his eccentric behaviour even with his elder brother Ashok Kumar and his family members whom he respected a lot ? (In this context, there is a story narrated by Ashok Kumar’s daughter, Preeti Ganguly which I will skip here. (Those interested may read it here).

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Today’s selection is in the voice of Geeta Dutt. Coming to think of it, it is just these two voices that have the capacity and the capability to make a foot tapper song – Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. I cannot think of any other female singer who can manage songs of the type we are discussing in this series. There could be exceptions but I cannot readily recall any right away.
