Among K L Saigal’s songs, here is a song that I first heard in the video form and was left unsatisfied because it wasonly about one minute long and ended abruptly. The lyrics of the song wre so nice that I was left wanting for the entire song. The audio of the song fortunately contains the whole song.

When India became independent in 1947, the nationalistic fervour among the newly independant Indians was naturally at its peak. People wanted to forge their own identity and one of the battle cries that was frequently heard those days was to give up wearing Western clothings and wear native clothings. Dressing up western style, applying make up etc was regarded as western and was mocked.

Aaraam hai haraam

It may be difficult to imagine today, but Indians actually idolised national leaders in the past. Till 1960s,every Indian household would have framed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi (father of the nation), Jawaharlal Nehru (Prime Minister of India) and Rajendra Prasad (President of India) hanging on the walls of their drawing rooms. In addition, people would also have photographs of Subhash Chandra Bose, Vallabh Bhai Patel etc too.

There is a movie called “Fashionable Wife” (1959) which was released half a century ago. From the name of the movie, one can guess that this movie is about a lady who indulges in “fashion”, much to the disapproval of others. I have not watched the movie, but I have watched this song, and this song seems to confirm my guess.

Zindagi hansne gaane ke liye hai pal do pal

Today Amitabh Bachchan is regarded as the actor of the millenium, but that was not the case in the early days of 1970s. Few bigwigs in Bollywood gave him much of a chance to come good. Most people were in fact quite dismissive of him. Matters were not helped by the fact that most of his earlier movies flopped at the box office.

Meri aawaaz suno

Till 1960s and 1970s, most households in India compulsorily had a few photos and calenders hanging from their walls. One category was that of were religious photos and calenders, and then other category was that of national leaders. It may be difficult or impossible for the present generation to today imagine that most households in India equated national leaders with Gods. In 1950s and 1960s,in every Indian household, one could see photographs of Mahatma Gandhi (Father of the nation), Rajendra Prasad (First President of India) and Jawaharlal Nehru (First Prime Minister of India). Then some people also had a few more photographs of a few more important leaders, viz Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose etc.
