Some days back, I had posted the first song from the film ‘Dark Street’ (1961), first on this blog that is. The song is ‘Itne Badey Jahaan Mein, Apna Bhi Koi Hota’ . It was a farmaish from Prakash ji that was pending for some time. In that write up, I had written that the film has some more wonderful songs, and had promised I would be posting more songs from this film. So here is the next song from this film. This is a gem of a duet rendered by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The lyrics for this film are penned by Indeevar and Gulshan Baawra. The YouTube post identifies the lyricist as Gulshan Baawra.

As I browse through my collection, through the YouTube, and through the Geet Kosh, I have jotted down a fairly long list of films that are still waiting in the wings to find an entry on this blog. And they satisfy two very important criteria that are kind of a thumb rule here. Most of these films are rare and obscure, and more importantly, they have music and songs that are just superb. Rather, these films carry songs that may not be all obscure, they have been popular, or at least played often on the radio, and are in the public memory. But the information about their creators, and the films to which these belong is not easy to relate.

Munshi Premchand (31 July 1880- 8 october 1936) was a premier Hindi novelist whose novels and stories have had an enormous influence on modern Hindi literature. When I look at his literary output, I am amazed at his vision. His vision was unbelievably progressive and futuristic, especially considering the era he lived in (late 19th century to early 20th century).

There was a time when Hindi film industry regularly churned out films based on mythological stories. These films were produced mostly by small time producers with small budget though a few of such films were also produced under big banners like Ram Rajya (1967) by Prakash Films.

FARIYAAD (1964) was produced and directed by Kidar Sharma under the banner of Show People. Ashok Sharma ( son of Kidar Sharma) and Zeb Rahman (also known as Preetibala) were in the lead roles with Ashok Kumar, Achala Sachdev, Dilip Dutt and Tuntun in the supporting roles. I remember to have read the reports in some of the film magazines at that time about propping up of Preetibala (Zeb Rahman) as another Madhubala in the making taking advantage of the resemblance of her face with that of Madhubala.
